Diane Keaton’s family said she died of pneumonia. A later account of her death certificate described the immediate cause as bacterial pneumonia. The reporting does not identify the bacterium, how she contracted the infection, or whether it could have been prevented.
What was reported about Diane Keaton’s death?
The Los Angeles Times reported on October 15, 2025, that Keaton’s family said she died of pneumonia (Los Angeles Times). On October 17, 2025, the Medical University of South Carolina discussed a death-certificate account identifying bacterial pneumonia as the immediate cause (MUSC).
That detail does not establish which bacterium caused Keaton’s illness. The cited reporting also does not explain where or how she became infected, what treatment she received, or whether any particular preventive measure would have changed the outcome.
What is bacterial pneumonia?
Pneumonia is an infection in the lungs. Bacteria and viruses are common causes; fungi and parasites can cause it less often. “Bacterial pneumonia” describes the type of infectious cause, not one specific disease or germ. Pneumococcal bacteria and Mycoplasma pneumoniae are among the bacteria that can cause community-acquired pneumonia, but many others are possible.

Community-acquired pneumonia develops outside a hospital. Healthcare-associated pneumonia develops during or following a healthcare stay; ventilator-associated pneumonia occurs after a person is placed on a ventilator. The setting and the germ can affect diagnosis and care. The CDC notes that clinicians are not always able to identify the germ responsible (CDC: About Pneumonia).
What symptoms can pneumonia cause?
Symptoms vary with the cause and the person. The CDC lists chest pain when breathing or coughing, cough, fatigue, fever or chills, shortness of breath, confusion, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea among possible pneumonia symptoms.

Signs in older adults
Older adults may not show the most familiar symptoms. With pneumococcal pneumonia, the CDC notes, confusion or low alertness can occur in older people. When should someone seek medical care?
- Contact a healthcare provider right away if a serious pneumococcal infection is suspected. The CDC warns that severe pneumococcal infection can lead to sepsis, long-term problems, or death (CDC: Pneumococcal disease complications).
- Seek emergency care for severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chest pain or pressure, or persistent confusion. These are among the emergency warning signs the CDC lists for complications from respiratory viruses; that list is not a complete triage guide for every cause of pneumonia (CDC: Respiratory-virus precautions and warning signs).

- People with chronic heart, liver, or lung disease, or diabetes.
- People with weakened immune systems.
Smoking, excessive alcohol use, and exposure to sick people are also risk-related behaviors or circumstances. These factors describe population-level risk; they do not explain what caused an individual’s illness. The CDC’s pneumonia risk-factor overview provides more detail.
Can pneumonia be prevented or treated?
Pneumonia is often treatable and can often be prevented, but no single measure prevents every case. Vaccines protect against particular infections that can cause pneumonia; they do not cover every bacterial or viral cause. Personal vaccine recommendations depend on a person’s age and health circumstances, so discuss them with a healthcare provider.

Other CDC prevention advice includes washing hands, avoiding close contact with people who are sick when possible, limiting exposure to cigarette smoke, and managing chronic health conditions (CDC: Pneumonia prevention).
Treatment depends on the cause and clinical circumstances. Antibiotics can treat bacterial infections but do not treat viral pneumonia; choosing care requires clinical assessment rather than self-treatment. How serious is pneumonia?
The CDC reports that more than 41,000 people in the United States died of pneumonia during 2022. Separately, it says about 1 in 20 people who get pneumococcal pneumonia die from it. That figure applies to pneumococcal pneumonia specifically—not to all bacterial pneumonia or pneumonia overall (CDC: Pneumonia prevention and U.S. mortality data; CDC: Pneumococcal disease complications).
