The account is not a direct public statement from Allen. It is newsworthy because Keaton and Allen were once romantically involved, made several films together, and were described as remaining friends for decades—while Keaton also publicly defended him amid allegations he has denied.
What was Woody Allen’s reported reaction to Diane Keaton’s death?
In a People-exclusive report carried by AOL on October 11, 2025, an unnamed source said Allen “is extremely distraught and surprised and upset.” The source also said Allen did not know Keaton’s health had declined. The report does not identify the source or quote Allen speaking directly about her death, so the description should be understood as an attributed account of his private reaction, not his own public statement. AOL’s report is the source for that characterization. Parade also recounted the reaction, relying on the People report rather than providing independent confirmation. Parade’s account.
What was the history between Keaton and Allen?
A romance and a long creative partnership
Keaton and Allen had a romantic relationship before continuing to work together professionally. The AOL report says they remained friends after the romance ended and quotes a source saying Allen appreciated Keaton and stayed in contact with her. Those details are reported accounts of their private relationship, not independently documented conversations.
Their collaborations spanned several decades. The films named in the AOL report include Play It Again, Sam, Sleeper, Love and Death, Annie Hall, Interiors, Manhattan, and Manhattan Murder Mystery. Euronews describes their shared filmography as eight films. Euronews’s report on Allen’s tribute gives that total.

Annie Hall became their defining collaboration
In Annie Hall (1977), Keaton played the title character. The film won Best Picture at the 1978 Academy Awards, and Keaton won Best Actress for her performance. Its place at the center of their shared story reflects both their professional partnership and Keaton’s lasting association with the role.
What did Keaton say about Allen amid the allegations?
Keaton publicly expressed support for Allen in 2018, posting: “Woody Allen is my friend and I continue to believe him,” according to the AOL report. Her statement is part of the complicated context of their friendship, but it does not establish the facts of the allegations.

The report says Mia Farrow alleged in 1992 that Allen had touched her daughter Dylan in a sexual manner. Allen has repeatedly denied the allegation. The report also says he was never charged with a crime. These are distinct facts: Farrow’s allegation, Allen’s denial, and the reported legal outcome. Keaton’s expression of belief should not be treated as an adjudication of the allegation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should the “distraught” claim be understood?
The strongest supported conclusion is limited: an unnamed source quoted in the People report carried by AOL characterized Allen as distraught, surprised, and upset. The available reporting does not establish the source’s proximity to Allen, and the repeated coverage does not amount to independent verification. Allen’s emotional reaction should therefore remain attributed to that source rather than stated as confirmed fact.
