Princess Diana confronted Camilla Parker Bowles at a party in winter 1989, according to Diana’s audiotape account reported by CBS News. Diana’s former bodyguard Ken Wharfe was present, CBS says; his later retellings add details about finding the couple together but differ in wording and sequence. The accounts describe a reported exchange, not a verbatim transcript that is identical across sources.
What did Diana say to Camilla?
In excerpts from Diana’s audiotapes reported by CBS News, Diana described finding Prince Charles and Camilla with another guest at a party and confronting Camilla about their relationship. CBS reports Diana saying she knew what was going on and did not want to be treated like an idiot. When Camilla reportedly asked what more Diana wanted, Diana’s answer was: “I want my husband.” CBS News, March 12, 2004.
CBS identifies Ken Wharfe, Diana’s royal bodyguard, as the other person in the room. Wharfe recalled that Charles and Camilla appeared embarrassed, saying: “I recall both the prince and Camilla being very embarrassed about this.” That is Wharfe’s reported impression of their reaction, not an independently established account of their feelings.
What did Ken Wharfe recall?
In a later account of Wharfe’s appearance on ITV’s Lorraine, The Royal Observer described Diana asking him to accompany her as she looked for Charles and Camilla. They located the pair together in a basement area, according to that recollection. The report quotes Diana telling Camilla, “Please don’t treat me like an idiot, I know what’s going on,” and says Camilla replied by referring to Diana’s two wonderful boys. The Royal Observer, 2022.

The same publication’s podcast-related account identifies the party as the 40th birthday celebration of Camilla’s sister, Annabel Elliot. That detail belongs to the later retelling; CBS’s report of Diana’s audiotape places the encounter at a party in winter 1989 without establishing that identification. The Royal Observer, 2022.
How do the accounts differ?
| Account | What it reports | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Diana’s audiotape, as reported by CBS News | A winter 1989 party, a confrontation with Camilla, and Diana’s reported reply: “I want my husband.” | A published account of excerpts from Diana’s recording. |
| Wharfe’s later recollection on ITV, as reported by The Royal Observer | Diana asks Wharfe to accompany her; they find Charles and Camilla in a basement area. The report gives different wording for the exchange. | A later recollection, not a verbatim transcript of Diana’s audiotape. |
| Wharfe’s podcast-related account, as reported by The Royal Observer | The gathering is identified as Annabel Elliot’s 40th birthday party. | A detail attributed to this later account, not established by the CBS report. |
The reports agree on the broad event—a confrontation about Charles and Camilla’s relationship—but not every detail or phrase. Keep the lines attributed to the account in which they appear rather than combining them into a single definitive transcript.
