Diana Ross returned to the Met Gala on May 5, 2025, at age 81, wearing a white gown with an 18-foot train embroidered with the names of her five children and eight grandchildren. The reported garment was a gown and train—not a separately verified shawl—and its family tribute was central to the look.
What Diana Ross wore to the 2025 Met Gala
Ross arrived in a sweeping white gown embellished with crystals and beads. Vogue and CBS News reported the train as 18 feet long; CBS said it covered nearly the entire staircase. The 2025 event celebrated “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” with the dress code “Tailored For You.” The appearance connected Ross to the evening’s tailoring theme, but the available accounts do not identify the gown as a direct historical reproduction. Why were names embroidered on the train?
The embroidery made the train a tribute to Ross’s family. It carried the names of her five children—Rhonda, Tracee, Chudney, Ross, and Evan—and her eight grandchildren—Raif, Callaway, Everlee, Leif, Indigo, Jagger, Bronx, and Ziggy. Ross described the gown’s inspiration to ABC News as “Affair forever, family gown.” She also said, “If you ever had pictures of the inside of the train, it has the names of all my children and my eight grandchildren,” adding, “So everyone’s names is embroidered in that.” ABC News’s interview with Ross; Associated Press coverage.
Who designed the look?
Vogue reports that Ross, her son Evan Ross, and Nigerian designer Ugo Mozie collaborated on the carpet look. The family names and sweeping train made the design personal, rather than simply a dramatic red-carpet silhouette. Accounts also describe the garment as vintage; the reporting does not establish a more specific vintage provenance.

Why was this a notable return?
The 2025 appearance was Ross’s first Met Gala in 22 years, following her 2003 attendance, according to Vogue. Vogue identifies her first gala appearance as 1978, when she attended with Halston, and calls 2025 her fifth Met Gala. Ross told ABC News her arrival was unplanned: “It was not a plan, everything was really, really last moment.”
What did Diana Ross wear inside the gala?
After the carpet, Ross changed into a purple-and-black beaded tulle gown that she designed herself. Vogue reports that she drew inspiration from her costumes in the 1975 film Mahogany. The second outfit was distinct from the white gown and long train worn on arrival.
