Hall’s continuation of Dexter: New Blood. Season 1 is complete, all 10 episodes are streaming on Paramount+, and the revival has earned strong—though not unanimous—reviews. It is the clearest reason yet for existing Dexter fans to return to the franchise, but newcomers should not start here: the story depends heavily on what happened before.
What Dexter: Resurrection is about
Dexter: Resurrection picks up after the events of Dexter: New Blood. The official premise begins with Dexter Morgan awakening from a ten-week coma after being shot by his son, Harrison. He then travels to New York City to find Harrison, while the two become increasingly drawn into the darkness they share. Meanwhile, Angel Batista’s questions threaten to bring Dexter’s past back into the present.
That setup gives the series two connected engines: Dexter’s attempt to reconnect with Harrison and the growing pressure created by people who know, or suspect, what Dexter has done. The result is not a reboot with a new cast or a separate interpretation of the character. It is a direct continuation of the television franchise, with Michael C. Hall again playing Dexter Morgan and Jack Alcott returning as Harrison.
The show is a Showtime crime drama rated TV-MA. Its New York setting, expanded ensemble and father-and-son conflict give the revival a different shape from the original Miami-based series, but the central question remains familiar: can Dexter control his violent impulses, and can his rules keep the people around him safe?

Why the revival has been received so well
The critical response is positive overall. At the time of the research snapshot, Rotten Tomatoes listed Season 1 at 95% from 63 critics, with a 90% audience score from more than 1,000 ratings. Metacritic listed a 65/100 critic score, classified as “Generally Favorable,” from 17 critic reviews.
Those numbers point in the same direction but should not be treated as interchangeable. Rotten Tomatoes reports the percentage of reviews counted as positive; Metacritic uses a weighted numerical average. Neither proves that every viewer will prefer Resurrection to the original series, and both scores can change as more reviews and audience ratings are added.
Rank #2
The recurring praise is more useful than the headline numbers. Critics have highlighted sharper writing, more layered characters, harder moral choices and a revival that feels more substantial than a simple nostalgia exercise. The season is not universally considered perfect: the Metacritic review collection also leaves room for the show to develop further. That is a fair description of the experience. Resurrection is often a confident return to form, but it still has to balance Dexter’s familiar ritualistic appeal with the consequences of keeping this character alive and central.
The cast brings the franchise’s past into the new story
Hall and Alcott lead the series as Dexter and Harrison. David Zayas returns as Angel Batista, whose investigation provides one of the strongest links to Dexter’s earlier life. James Remar is also back as Harry Morgan, while Uma Thurman plays Charley.
The Season 1 ensemble also includes Peter Dinklage, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Kadia Saraf, Dominic Fumusa and Emilia Suárez. The returning faces matter because the show is built around accumulated history. Dexter’s past is not merely background information; it is the source of the danger closing in on him.
That is also why the series works better as a continuation than it would as an isolated crime thriller. Viewers who already understand Dexter’s code, his relationship with Harrison and Batista’s place in the story can appreciate the moral pressure immediately. New viewers may understand the basic plot, but they will miss much of the emotional and investigative context.

What to watch before Resurrection
- Dexter: Watch the original series first if you want the full history of Dexter Morgan, his code and the relationships that define his choices.
- Dexter: New Blood: This is essential preparation. Resurrection follows directly from its ending, including the conflict between Dexter and Harrison.
- Dexter: Resurrection: Begin the 10-episode continuation only after New Blood.
Dexter: Original Sin is optional for this particular viewing path. It is a prequel about a younger Dexter, with Michael C. Hall providing narration rather than playing the younger version on screen. It can add broader franchise context, but it is not required to understand the central premise of Resurrection.
For readers who prefer to explore the literary origin, Jeff Lindsay’s Darkly Dreaming Dexter is the first Dexter novel. Penguin Random House lists the Vintage Crime/Black Lizard paperback at 304 pages, ISBN 9780307277886, and describes it as the book that introduced the character who inspired the television franchise. It is best approached as the original Dexter novel—not as a direct adaptation of Resurrection or a television-continuity tie-in.
Is Paramount+ worth paying for this show?
For a Dexter fan who wants to watch the continuation legally as it is hosted, Paramount+ is the relevant destination: the service currently carries all 10 episodes. That makes the show a reasonable subscription trigger for viewers who were already interested in the franchise or who have other Paramount+ and Showtime programming they want to watch.
It is not proof that the service is worth its price for everyone. A subscription decision depends on your country, plan availability, current price and how much else you will watch during the billing period. The original claim that this was the show that made someone pay for Paramount+ is a personal viewing decision, not an objective assessment of the platform’s overall value.
Collectors may also want a physical copy of the season. Retail and specialist listings have indicated a Dexter: Resurrection: The Complete First Season Blu-ray/DVD release, but format, stock and regional availability should be checked before purchase. A Dexter: Resurrection Season 1 physical copy is therefore a possible alternative to streaming, not a product whose availability can be assumed in every market.

Season 2 is confirmed—but there is no verified premiere date yet
Paramount has confirmed a second season, and production began in New York City on April 22, 2026. Desmond Harrington was elevated to series regular.
Paramount+’s July 27, 2026 cast guide confirms the returns of Hall, Thurman, Alcott, Mwine, Saraf, Fumusa, Remar, Harrington and Krysten Ritter, among others. Newly announced or newly established regular roles include Brian Cox as the New York Ripper, Dan Stevens as the Five Borough Killer, Bokeem Woodbine as Captain Mixon and Nona Parker Johnson as Fiona Mixon. Gabriel Luna is identified as a guest star.
What has not been verified in the official material is a Season 2 release date. No October 2026 premiere—or any other month—should be treated as confirmed until Paramount+ announces one. The most reliable current update is that the season is in production and has a substantial returning and new cast.

Who should watch it?
- Watch it if: you completed New Blood, want more of Dexter and Harrison’s story, and enjoy crime dramas built around morally compromised protagonists.
- Watch it with caution if: you disliked the direction or ending of New Blood. The continuation directly engages with that story rather than resetting it.
- Start elsewhere if: you have never watched Dexter and do not want to commit to the earlier series. The show is accessible enough to explain its immediate setup, but it is not designed as a clean entry point.
The strongest case for Dexter: Resurrection is not that it erases the franchise’s uneven history. It is that the series gives Dexter’s return a meaningful problem: his son knows who he is, his old world is still connected to him, and the rules that once organized his life are no longer enough to contain the consequences.

How many episodes are in Season 1?
Season 1 has 10 episodes. All 10 are currently listed as streaming on Paramount+.
Do I need to watch Dexter: New Blood first?
Yes. The premise begins immediately after the events of New Blood, so watching it first provides essential story and character context.
When will Season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection premiere?
Season 2 is confirmed and began production in New York on April 22, 2026, but the official sources reviewed here do not verify a premiere date.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Dexter: Resurrection is a strong continuation rather than a standalone reboot. Its complete 10-episode first season is streaming on Paramount+, and its positive critical response is supported by sharper character work and more consequential moral conflicts. Watch the original Dexter and New Blood first for the full effect; if you already know the franchise, this is the return most likely to justify another visit.
