Dexter lets Captain Aaron Spencer escape because he needs to find out where Spencer is holding his son, Nicky. Killing Spencer on the table would leave Dexter without that information; following him gives Dexter a chance to reach the boy.
Why did Dexter let Spencer escape?
Dexter’s immediate priority is locating Nicky, who is still missing. In the episode’s closing sequence, Dexter has Spencer restrained at the kill table, cuts off one of his fingers, and loosens the restraint material. Spencer gets free, and Dexter follows him. The sequence, as described in the episode recap, supports a tactical explanation: Dexter needs Spencer alive long enough to lead him to Nicky.

That is different from saying Dexter deliberately planned every detail of the escape. The available accounts do not establish whether Dexter intended from the outset to let Spencer break free. What the ending does make clear is that Dexter’s need to find a child in danger takes precedence over killing Spencer immediately.
Who is the villain, and what is at stake?
The man on Dexter’s table is Captain Aaron Spencer, the kidnapper Dexter has been closing in on. Paramount+ describes Episode 9 as “Dexter closes in on the kidnapper.” The unresolved question is where Spencer is keeping Nicky—not simply whether Spencer deserves to die under Dexter’s Code.

What happens to Nicky after the cliffhanger?
The story continues in the finale: Patrick Gibson said after the finale that Dexter pursues Spencer to the place where Nicky is being held. The escape is therefore a cliffhanger that leads directly into Dexter’s attempt to reach the boy, rather than a resolution to the kidnapping.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which episode ends with Spencer’s escape?
It is Season 1, Episode 9, “Blood Drive.” Paramount+ lists the episode at 50 minutes and shows February 7, 2025 as the date on its release listing; that is the date displayed for Paramount+ and should not be treated as a universal premiere date across territories or distributors. The platform’s episode page identifies the episode, while its “Final Cut” feature includes discussion of Spencer’s kill-room callbacks without spelling out Dexter’s precise calculation in the closing scene.
