The band later changed personnel: it reunited in 1996 with Josh Freese replacing Myers, and its official biography documents a different five-person touring lineup for its 2023 50th-anniversary tour. DEVO announced additional 2026 tour dates, but that announcement did not name the musicians performing. Here’s who the members were, how the lineup evolved, and what selected members did beyond the band.
Who were DEVO’s formative members?
DEVO dates its birth to 1973 and traces its formative lineup to Akron, Ohio. The five members were Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh, Gerald and Bob Casale, and drummer Alan Myers. Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale met as students at Kent State University and began exchanging ideas about art and music, which grew into a project that joined sound, visual performance and social commentary. DEVO’s official biography recounts the band’s origins.

- Mark Mothersbaugh: Co-founder and one of the Mothersbaugh brothers in the original five.
- Bob Mothersbaugh: Mark’s brother and a formative member.
- Gerald “Jerry” Casale: Co-founder and one of the Casale brothers.
- Bob Casale: Gerald’s brother and a formative member.
- Alan Myers: The drummer in the formative lineup.
The band’s name and concept drew on “devolution”—the idea that society can regress rather than progress. DEVO’s official account connects the group’s formation to activism and the aftermath of the Kent State shootings in 1970. GRAMMY.com also describes the band’s message as a response to social regression and conformity. GRAMMY.com’s history and interview offers further context.
How did DEVO’s lineup change?
The five formative members are not the same as every later touring lineup. DEVO’s official biography says the band went on hiatus in 1990 and reunited in 1996, when Josh Freese replaced Myers on drums. It says Freese remained with DEVO for nearly two decades. The same biography identifies this lineup for the band’s 2023 50th-anniversary tour:

What became of the members beyond DEVO?
Mark Mothersbaugh
After DEVO’s hiatus, Mothersbaugh built a career composing for film, television, commercials and games. DEVO’s official biography lists work on Pee-wee’s Playhouse and The Rugrats Movie among his credits. It also says he founded Mutato Muzika with collaborators including Bob Mothersbaugh and Bob Casale. These are selected examples rather than a complete account of his work. The Associated Press’s 2025 interview and history discusses the band and some of its members’ work beyond it.
Gerald “Jerry” Casale
Casale directed many DEVO music videos and later directed videos for other artists as well as commercials, according to DEVO’s official biography. The AP also describes his later directing work. DEVO’s biography provides the band’s account of his career.
Bob and Alan
Bob Casale and Alan Myers are described as late on DEVO’s official biography. That source does not establish their death dates or causes, so those details are not included here. It says Josh Hager took over Bob Casale’s rhythm-guitar and synth duties in the 2023 touring lineup; it records Freese’s replacement of Myers after the reunion.

Why DEVO’s music and image endure
DEVO’s visual style was part of its argument, not simply a costume around the music. The band used sharply controlled, comic performance and a deliberately odd public image to explore conformity, group behavior and the possibility of social regression. The Associated Press recounts the group’s 1978 Brian Eno-produced debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, and reports that Freedom of Choice (1980), which features “Whip It,” reached platinum status. AP also quotes Casale reflecting on how the band was received: “We were trivialized and pigeonholed.” Read the AP history and interview.
For a documentary-focused introduction, DEVO announced in August 2025 that its documentary was streaming worldwide on Netflix and that Netflix had launched an official DEVO playlist.
