Devmanus is worth watching chiefly for the lived-in performances of Mahesh Manjrekar and Renuka Shahane, whose mature, well-matched pairing gives this Marathi drama its emotional centre. It adapts the central premise of Vadh into a Marathi cultural setting, but Deepa Gahlot’s review finds it less taut than the earlier film and questions the plausibility of some behavior after a pivotal crime. The result is a respectable adaptation with strong leads, not a more compelling thriller than its model.
What is Devmanus about?
Directed by Tejas Prabha Vijay Deoskar, Devmanus follows Keshav (Mahesh Manjrekar), a retired schoolteacher, and his wife Laxmi (Renuka Shahane). They mortgage their home and land to fund their son’s education abroad, only to find themselves under pressure from the lender and unsupported by their son. The story’s focus is an ordinary couple pushed into an increasingly desperate situation.
The film stars Manjrekar, Shahane and Subodh Bhave. Apple TV India lists Marathi audio and English (India) SDH subtitles; that catalog information does not establish whether the film is currently available to stream, rent or buy in a particular country.
How well do the performances work?
The leads are the film’s clearest strength. Shahane gives Laxmi both resolve and vulnerability: she can judge her husband’s choices while remaining bound to him by love. Manjrekar’s presence and the pair’s shared maturity give the marriage weight, making their relationship more affecting than a simple plot device.

Gahlot’s main reservation is that Manjrekar does not seem as naturally meek as Sanjay Mishra in the corresponding role in Vadh. That difference matters because the story depends on the tension between a mild-mannered man’s ordinary decency and the extreme pressure around him. The casting brings authority and credibility of its own, but makes the character’s transformation harder to accept at certain points.
How does Devmanus compare with Vadh?
Gahlot describes the Marathi film as more or less faithful to Vadh, while director Deoskar has framed it as an adaptation rather than a straightforward remake. In an interview published by Bollywood Hungama on April 29, 2025, he said: “So yes, the concept of the story of Devmanus is based on Vadh. But the world, the characters, the motives and the nuances are completely different.” Those descriptions can coexist: the films share a strong story foundation, but Devmanus reshapes its setting and details.

The comparison is most useful across four areas:
- Lead pairing: Shahane brings strength to Laxmi, and the leads’ maturity gives the marriage a distinctive emotional texture. Gahlot finds Manjrekar less naturally meek than Mishra in the comparable role.
- Adaptation: The central story remains recognizably close to Vadh, but the Marathi film builds a different local world around it.
- Plausibility and pace: Gahlot considers Devmanus less taut, and finds some later character behavior difficult to believe.
- Cultural setting: Marathi-specific details give the story a local identity, though Gahlot feels some additions do not serve the plot equally well.
Do the Marathi cultural details deepen the story?
The adaptation adds a lavani dance, a Dashavatar performance, a pilgrimage to Pandharpur and Laxmi’s background in Paithani weaving. Together, these details locate the characters in a recognizable cultural world rather than simply transferring the earlier film’s premise unchanged. Their contribution is uneven, however: the setting gains texture, but not every addition strengthens the drama’s forward movement.
What holds the film back?
The central weakness is the gap between the character the story establishes and the behavior it later asks the audience to accept. Keshav’s appeal lies in the idea of a decent, unassuming man finally resisting pressure from his family, a lender and a politician. Gahlot questions how calculating he becomes after the murder, and the shift undercuts some of the film’s intended plausibility. The film’s pacing is also less taut than Vadh, so the tension does not build as cleanly.

Verdict: should you watch Devmanus?
Choose Devmanus for Manjrekar and Shahane’s grounded pairing, the emotional conflict of a marriage under strain and a story relocated into Marathi life. If you want the tighter version of this premise, Gahlot’s comparison favors Vadh. Devmanus remains a respectable adaptation, but its uneven plot plausibility and pacing keep it from fully matching its leads.
