Devil May Cry is an eight-episode Netflix adult animated series about Dante, an orphaned demon hunter drawn into a plot to open a portal between the human and demon realms. The season premiered on April 3, 2025, and adapts Capcom’s video-game franchise without the official sources establishing a definitive place for it in game continuity.
What is Devil May Cry Season 1 about?
Netflix’s synopsis places Dante at the center of an attempt to open a portal between the human and demon realms. He is an orphaned demon hunter for hire who initially does not know the stakes. The story begins with a violent heist at a Vatican City museum, then brings Dante into conflict with forces pursuing a rift between worlds.
The season is based on Capcom’s Devil May Cry games, but it is an animated adaptation rather than a game walkthrough. Official descriptions do not identify it as a one-to-one retelling of a particular game or settle its position in a definitive game timeline. The show’s scripted story and the games’ interactive action are different ways into the same franchise.
