Despicable Me 4 opened at No. 1 worldwide with a reported $230 million, Comcast announced on July 16, 2024. That studio-reported opening-period figure is distinct from the film’s $149.3 million global total for July 5–7 and its five-day North American opening of $122.6 million.
What did Despicable Me 4 make in its global debut?
Comcast reported on July 16, 2024, that Universal Pictures’ Despicable Me 4 had opened as the No. 1 film globally with $230 million worldwide. The figure describes the film’s reported opening period; it is not its eventual lifetime gross. Comcast’s announcement also describes Steve Carell’s return as Gru and Will Ferrell voicing Maxime Le Mal, Gru’s former schoolmate and rival.
Why are several different opening figures reported?
Box-office reports can describe different time windows and territories. The $230 million figure is Comcast’s worldwide opening-period announcement. Other reports isolate a conventional Friday-to-Sunday weekend or the North American five-day holiday frame, so the totals should not be treated as competing measurements of the same period.
| Figure | Period and territory | Source and reporting date |
|---|---|---|
| $230 million | Worldwide opening-period total; the announcement does not specify an identical Friday–Sunday window. | Comcast, July 16, 2024 |
| $149.3 million | Worldwide weekend of July 5–7, 2024: $75 million in North America and $74.3 million internationally. | Screen International, citing Comscore, 2024 |
| $122.6 million | Five-day opening in North America. | Official Japanese film-site post, July 8, 2024 |
The five-day North American number is not a worldwide total, and the July 5–7 worldwide weekend covers a narrower period. Keeping the dates and territory attached to each figure explains why they differ.

How broad was the international rollout?
In its July 8, 2024 post, the official Japanese film site reported that the movie had opened in 73 international territories and ranked No. 1 in 46 of them. The same post put its international gross at about $106 million and its worldwide cumulative total at $229 million at that reporting point. Those are dated early-release figures, not final totals. The official film-site report provides that snapshot.
What was the film’s eventual worldwide box office?
The two live box-office databases listed totals near $1 billion when accessed on October 8, 2026, but they do not give the same worldwide figure. Box Office Mojo listed $972,021,410; The Numbers listed $986,706,425. Their domestic totals match at $361,004,205, as do their reported domestic opening figures of $75,009,210. The worldwide discrepancy should be preserved rather than silently resolved.

What did the opening mean for the franchise?
Comcast said in its July 16, 2024 announcement that the broader Despicable Me/Minions franchise had passed $5 billion in global box office. The company described it at the time as the only animated franchise to reach that milestone. This is the studio’s 2024 characterization of the franchise, separate from Despicable Me 4’s individual opening and lifetime totals.
