Who are Red and Chloe?
Red is the film’s principal new character. She is the rebellious daughter of the Queen of Hearts and has grown up under the shadow of her mother’s reputation. Her conflict is personal: rather than simply defeat an enemy, Red wants to understand what happened to her mother and whether that history can be changed.
Chloe is Cinderella’s daughter and represents a new branch of Auradon royalty. She becomes Red’s ally when the Queen of Hearts threatens Auradon. Their partnership is the film’s central relationship, with Chloe’s more conventional royal background contrasting with Red’s Wonderland identity and distrust of authority.

The situation changes when the Queen of Hearts launches a coup against Auradon. Red and Chloe then discover a way to travel backward in time. Their goal is to stop the traumatic event that eventually shaped the Queen of Hearts into the villain Red knows.
The trailer establishes four main ideas:
- Red and Chloe are the new leads. The film is designed as a new entry point rather than another story built primarily around Mal and Evie.
- The conflict is also a family story. Red is confronting her mother’s past, not just battling a distant antagonist.
- Time travel drives the plot. The girls’ attempt to change the past creates the movie’s main mystery and raises the possibility of consequences in the present.
- Auradon and Wonderland collide. The story brings together the Queen of Hearts, Cinderella, Uma, Merlin, the Fairy Godmother and other legacy figures.
What is The Rise of Red about?
When the Queen of Hearts threatens Auradon, Red and Chloe are pushed into an alliance. Their time-travel mission takes them to an earlier period in the characters’ lives, before the Queen of Hearts fully becomes the villain seen in the present-day story.
The film’s premise is therefore more than a standard heroes-versus-villain adventure. Red is trying to change the chain of events that shaped her mother, while Chloe is drawn into a situation involving her own family and Auradon’s history. The movie presents the past as something that may be revisited, but not necessarily changed without consequences.
That setup also lets the film use younger versions of characters connected to Cinderella and Wonderland. It expands the franchise’s fairy-tale mythology while giving Red and Chloe a story that can continue beyond the original trilogy.
