His update described the outcome of the operation—not an independent assessment of her longer-term recovery.
What Derek Hough announced
Hough shared the news in an Instagram update, saying: “With immense relief, gratitude and overwhelming joy I’d like to share that Hayley’s cranioplasty surgery has been successfully completed as planned.” He called it a significant milestone in her recovery and said she was on the “path to a full recovery.” Those statements reflect Hough’s account of the operation and his outlook at the time. ABC News reported his announcement on Dec. 21, 2023.
Why Erbert needed a cranioplasty
According to the couple’s public account, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, Erbert was taken to a hospital after a Dec. 5, 2023, performance near Washington, D.C. She was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma caused by a burst blood vessel, and Hough said she needed emergency surgery to stop the bleeding.
From emergency craniectomy to cranioplasty
The emergency operation was a craniectomy: surgeons removed part of Erbert’s skull. A cranioplasty is a later procedure to repair that opening. Hough said the implant was intended to restore the skull’s natural shape and protect the brain from injury. Erbert wore a helmet while part of her skull was absent, the Times reported.

ABC News explained in February 2024 that the removed section may be replaced with bone or a metal or plastic plate. The reports do not identify the material used in Erbert’s implant. Hough had not publicly commented on what caused the blood vessel to burst, according to the Times.
What later reporting says about her recovery
In a July 2026 interview with Parade, Erbert described an intense rehabilitation that included relearning how to walk. She said she set a goal of returning to the stage; Parade reported that she performed again in April 2024, about four months after the emergency. Her experience is an individual account, not a typical recovery timetable or a medical prognosis for others.
