Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert first met professionally in 2014, when Erbert joined Hough and his sister Julianne’s Move Live tour. Their romance reportedly began later, after they stopped working together; they made the relationship public in May 2017, married in 2023 and welcomed daughter Everley Capri in December 2025.
How Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert met
Erbert joined Derek and Julianne Hough’s Move Live tour as a dancer in 2014. Glamour reports that Derek hired her for the tour, and the couple later recalled first crossing paths that summer. Their first documented connection was therefore a professional dance partnership, not a public romance.
When their relationship began
The exact start of their private relationship is not firmly established. Glamour says they reportedly began dating around September 2015, when Erbert joined the Dancing with the Stars troupe. In a July 2026 interview with Parade, Erbert described the transition this way: “Once we stopped working together, then we were like, ‘Do we like each other? I think we do.’ And then it kind of started from there.” That account supports a relationship beginning after their working partnership, but does not set a precise date.
Hough hinted in November 2016 that he might be seeing someone, telling The Ellen DeGeneres Show, “Perhaps, maybe I am.” The account cited by Glamour does not identify Erbert as the person he meant. Their relationship became public on social media on May 4, 2017, according to Glamour; The Knot also dates their public confirmation to 2017.

Engagement and wedding
Hough and Erbert announced their engagement on June 2, 2022, a date reported by both Glamour and The Knot. They married on August 26, 2023, in Monterey County, California. ABC News confirmed the date and location and reported that 106 guests attended. The Knot says their first dance was to “Fall Into Me” by Florrest Blakk.
Erbert has described her approach to sharing personal details as cautious: “It’s a very, very personal matter, and I’m not that open a person typically. I say I’m a private person living in public life,” she told Parade. That distinction helps explain why public milestones are easier to date than the beginning of their private relationship.

A health crisis and return to dance
In December 2023, while the couple were on tour in Washington, D.C., their heads collided during a performance. Parade’s 2026 interview reports that Erbert became disoriented backstage and was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma; she required emergency craniectomy.
Good Morning America reported that they returned to the studio in March 2024. Parade says Erbert returned to the stage in April, four months after the emergency. These dates describe her reported experience, not a general recovery timetable.
