Genya does not permanently become a demon. Eating demon flesh lets him temporarily take on demon-like traits, according to the official Hashira Training Arc character profile. He remains a Demon Slayer Corps swordsman; the change is a temporary ability, not a lasting conversion.
How does Genya get demon-like abilities?
Eating a demon is the trigger. The official anime profile says Genya can “temporarily take on the constitution of a demon” by eating one. SEGA’s licensed The Hinokami Chronicles 2 profile describes the same ability as consuming demon flesh to “temporarily take on its traits” (SEGA character profile).
Both descriptions point to a temporary change in his constitution or traits. They do not say that Genya becomes a demon permanently or loses his identity as a Corps swordsman.
Does Genya stop being a Demon Slayer?
No. The official anime profile identifies Genya as a swordsman in the Demon Slayer Corps and one of Tanjiro’s peers. It also identifies him as the younger brother of Sanemi Shinazugawa, the Wind Hashira. His unusual ability exists alongside his role in the Corps.

What exactly changes, and for how long?
The official character summaries establish the trigger and the temporary nature of the effect, but do not explain its detailed biological mechanism or give a precise duration. They do not verify a specific organ, physical feature, or time limit as the explanation for the ability. The clearest supported answer is simply that eating demon flesh temporarily lets Genya take on demonic traits.

For the story and its source material, Shueisha’s official Demon Slayer series page lists collected manga volumes and the official fanbook Corps Records 2. The listing does not identify a specific volume as the explanation for Genya’s ability.
