Spoilers for the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga. Yoriichi Tsugikuni is a pivotal figure from the series’ past: he is the twin brother of Michikatsu Tsugikuni, who becomes the demon Kokushibo, and the swordsman associated with Sun Breathing. His family ties and the legacy of his technique connect his history to Tanjiro’s story.
Yoriichi’s place in Demon Slayer
Yoriichi is part of the canon of Koyoharu Gotouge’s manga Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, which began serialization in 2016. The story reveals him through the consequences of his life: his relationship with Michikatsu, his extraordinary swordsmanship, and the techniques and memories that endure after his death.
His importance is not simply that he was a formidable fighter. Yoriichi’s history links the series’ earlier conflict with the choices and inherited traditions that shape its present-day characters.
Yoriichi and Michikatsu: twin brothers on different paths
Yoriichi and Michikatsu Tsugikuni are twins. Michikatsu later becomes Kokushibo, one of the demons who serves Muzan Kibutsuji. Their relationship gives Yoriichi’s story a personal dimension: the brothers’ paths diverge, and Michikatsu’s later identity makes their connection relevant to the central conflict.

The manga is the authority for the order and details of their family history. Broad character summaries can help readers identify the relationship, but they are not a substitute for the manga’s account of what each brother experienced or why their lives took different turns.
Sun Breathing and the legacy beyond his lifetime
Yoriichi is associated with Sun Breathing, a foundational breathing style whose influence reaches beyond his own era. The manga connects that legacy to Tanjiro’s family tradition, making Yoriichi’s history relevant to Tanjiro even though the two belong to different generations.

That connection should not be flattened into the claim that Tanjiro simply inherits Yoriichi’s life or abilities. The meaningful link is the survival and transmission of a tradition, alongside the story’s treatment of memory and technique. Yoriichi’s legacy matters because it offers a route from the past into the present narrative.
What is canon, and what should be treated cautiously?
For Yoriichi’s origin, distinguish what the manga establishes from interpretation. The twin relationship, Michikatsu’s later identity as Kokushibo, and Yoriichi’s association with Sun Breathing are useful anchors. Similarities between characters, fan theories, and claims about exactly how much of the story an anime adaptation has covered are not origin facts unless supported by the relevant manga or official adaptation material.

Do not assume that Yoriichi founded the Demon Slayer Corps: the available material cited here does not establish that claim. Nor does it establish a definitive account of the anime’s complete coverage of his background. Readers seeking the full sequence should follow the manga rather than rely on a summary or an adaptation-completeness claim.

The manga is the best place to see the character history in its original context. VIZ’s catalog lists the series through volume 23 and identifies that volume as the final one; its shop also lists a complete box set containing volumes 1–23. The box set is the full manga collection, not a special Yoriichi edition.

Treat them as optional franchise references, not substitutes for the manga’s account.
