He turned Nezuko into a demon, making him the direct cause of Tanjiro’s quest and, as the official anime profile puts it, Tanjiro’s “sworn enemy.” Muzan also hides behind a human identity, a key part of how he moves through the story.
Who is Kibutsuji Muzan?
Muzan is the demon at the center of the series’ main conflict. The official Japanese Infinity Castle character page describes him as the progenitor of demons and says he sends the Demon Slayer Corps into the Infinity Castle. That establishes his position in the conflict without spelling out every detail of how demons are created.

In the official English anime character profile, Muzan is described as “The one responsible for turning Nezuko into a demon, and so he is Tanjiro’s sworn enemy.” This is the profile’s wording, not a quotation attributed to a creator or cast member.
Why did Muzan turn Nezuko into a demon?
The official character profiles establish that Muzan turned Nezuko into a demon, but they do not explain his specific motive for doing so. What is clear from the story’s setup is the consequence: Nezuko’s transformation sets Tanjiro on his path, and Muzan becomes the enemy Tanjiro must confront.

How does Muzan conceal himself?
The official Japanese profile for the series’ first arc says Muzan usually lives while pretending to be human. This human façade distinguishes his public appearance from his role as the progenitor of demons and Tanjiro’s archenemy. The short profile does not provide a full account of his identities or methods of concealment.
What is Muzan’s role in the Infinity Castle conflict?
The official Infinity Castle character page identifies Muzan as the figure who sends the Demon Slayer Corps into the castle. This makes him central to the setup of that conflict; the profile itself does not explain the castle’s detailed mechanics or provide a complete account of the battle.

What happens to Muzan in the manga?
Manga ending spoilers below.
Shonen Jump lists volume 23 as the final volume of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Its synopsis says the long conflict with Muzan reaches its conclusion and that four medicines Tamayo administers weaken and corner him. The publisher’s summary does not describe the full sequence of the final battle, so readers seeking every ending detail should read the manga itself.
VIZ’s series catalog also lists the manga and describes the battle against Muzan as ongoing in volume 21. Volume 23 is the publisher-identified endpoint of that conflict.

Where should you continue the story?
- Want the completed story? Continue with the manga through volume 23, which Shonen Jump identifies as the final volume and which contains the conclusion of the Muzan conflict.
- Want to avoid manga-ending spoilers? Stop before reading the volume 23 synopsis or the final volume until you are ready for the ending.
- Prefer the anime? Follow the official anime releases; the character profiles establish Muzan’s role, but do not substitute for the manga’s complete ending.
