Demi Moore’s body-horror film The Substance received a lengthy standing ovation after its Cannes screening on May 19, 2024. The film was in competition at the 77th Cannes Film Festival and went on to win the festival’s Best Screenplay award—not the Palme d’Or. Accounts differ on how long the ovation lasted, so no single duration should be treated as an official measurement.
Why did The Substance get a standing ovation at Cannes?
The film’s Cannes reception brought attention to its sharp, unsettling take on Hollywood’s expectations of women and aging. Written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, The Substance is a body-horror satire starring Moore, Margaret Qualley, and Dennis Quaid. Film Fest Gent describes it as a parable about the limited time Hollywood allows women to remain valuable for their beauty.
At the center of the story is Elisabeth Sparkle, a former Hollywood star who now hosts a daytime aerobics show. She takes a secret drug that temporarily creates a younger version of herself. The premise is fictional; it is not a real treatment or health product. Film Fest Gent lists the film as a 140-minute drama/horror movie in English. Film Fest Gent’s film record provides its synopsis and credits.
When did the film screen, and what did it win?
The Substance was presented in competition at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 19, 2024. The festival’s event page documents the presentation and red-carpet appearance. On May 25, Cannes awarded Fargeat the Best Screenplay prize for the film. It did not win the Palme d’Or, the festival’s top award. The Associated Press awards report covers the screenplay win.

How long was the standing ovation?
Published accounts give different timings, and the Cannes event pages reviewed do not provide an official measured duration. Film Fest Gent reports ten minutes. In a Variety Australia interview, the interviewer refers to an eleven-minute ovation; Moore replies that she had read reports saying thirteen minutes. Those are attributed reports, not a settled Cannes statistic. “A lengthy standing ovation” is the most accurate unqualified description.
