Demi Moore became emotional near the end of her acceptance speech after winning the 2025 Screen Actors Guild Award for her leading performance in The Substance. She recalled a younger version of herself who did not believe in her abilities, then paused and closed by thanking the audience.
What happened during Demi Moore’s speech?
At the 31st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on February 23, 2025, Moore accepted the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for The Substance. The win was for an individual film performance, not a lifetime-achievement honor. SAG-AFTRA’s announcement of the winners and the Associated Press winners report identify Moore and the film as the category’s winners.
In contemporaneous coverage, ABC/GMA described Moore’s remarks as heartfelt and reported that she trailed off emotionally after saying, “That little girl who didn’t believe in herself.” The outlet quoted her closing words: “The words are kind of beyond me, so I’m just gonna to have to just say thank you.” ABC/GMA’s report captures the pause and her thanks; it does not establish a complete, verified transcript of the speech.
Why the moment resonated
Moore’s reference to a younger self who doubted herself gave the closing moment a personal note. The available contemporaneous account supports describing an emotional pause followed by thanks; it does not establish a more specific cause for her emotion, so it is best not to infer one.
