In a September 2018 interview, actress Delta Burke described her experience with weight struggles, depression, and a type 2 diabetes diagnosis—and the changes she said helped her manage her health at that time. Her account is a personal story, not a report of her current health or medical advice for others.
What Delta Burke shared in 2018
In Yahoo Lifestyle’s September 28, 2018 interview, Burke reflected on her health and life after leaving Designing Women. The article reported that her weight had reached 215 pounds at its highest around that period and was 150 pounds at the time of the interview. It also said she had lost 20 pounds while improving control of her blood glucose. These are figures reported in that interview, not independently verified measurements or updates on her present health.
Burke described a history that included weight-related self-criticism, depression, and a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Looking back, she said, “I’ve bounced back from it all,” and described wanting to encourage people to talk about what they are experiencing.

Finding a doctor she trusted
Burke said it mattered to find a doctor she trusted—someone willing to take time to explain what was going on. She also encouraged people to learn about their health concerns: “You have to learn about whatever is going on with you.”

Giving herself credit
Rather than continuing to criticize herself over weight, Burke said she began to value maintaining it: “I decided to stop beating myself up and started to give myself credit for maintaining weight.” Her comments describe a shift in how she viewed her own progress, not a universal measure of health or success.
Changing eating and monitoring blood glucose
Burke said she began a stringent eating program and tested her blood glucose more often. She attributed better glucose control and a 20-pound loss to that period of change. The interview does not specify a testing device, a testing schedule, or a diet plan that readers could reproduce.

She also said she used Byetta at the time. The FDA’s 2025 label identifies BYETTA (exenatide) as a prescription medicine for glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes; the historical interview does not establish that Burke still uses it. A separate FDA guidance on prescription point-of-care glucose-monitoring systems expressly excludes over-the-counter home-use self-monitoring systems from its scope. The interview names no meter brand or model and endorses no device.
Walking with her husband
Burke also recounted walking with her husband as part of her routine. The interview presents this as one element of her personal experience, not a prescribed exercise plan.

How to read the story today
The profile offers a dated account of how Burke described living with health challenges and making changes in 2018. It does not confirm her current diagnosis, weight, treatment, or health status. Nor does one person’s experience establish that a particular eating approach, amount of glucose testing, medication, or weight change will be appropriate or effective for someone else.
Anyone considering home blood glucose monitoring should ask a clinician whether it belongs in their care plan and how often to do it. Burke’s story can be read as an account of the value she placed on communication, learning, and self-compassion—not as clinical guidance.
