Six books, six different routes into Indian fiction
The Other Sister — Amrita Tripathi
Maya, a busy urban millennial, abruptly goes offline and ghosts her friends. As they try to understand her absence, Maya confronts fear, honesty, generational trauma, and family secrets. Her path brings therapy and godmen into conversation with superstition and nostalgia.
Miss Samuel: A Jewish-Indian Saga — Sheela Rohekar, translated by Madhu Singh
Narrated by nearly seventy-year-old Miss Seema Samuel from an old-age home, the novel follows a family across the Konkan coast, Ahmedabad, and Pune. It examines the pull between Jewish faith and Indian identity, as well as persecution, acceptance, and the longing for aliyah. Scroll’s article frames the Bene Israel community’s arrival on the Konkan coast as a shipwreck around 2,000 years ago; that detail is the article’s account, not independently established here.

Muses Over Mumbai: Stories — Murzban F Shroff
This collection brings together city stories with protagonists facing sharply different challenges: a constable grappling with caste and morality, an environmental activist, a waste collector trying to help stray dogs, and a man caught in a housing-society dispute. Scroll describes the collection as a tribute to Mumbai and its nocturnal protagonists.
Malayali Memorial And Other Stories — Unni R, translated by J Devika
The title story centers on a seemingly powerless man in a casteist family. In “Boy and Girl,” a young man’s tears affect a confident young woman. Scroll presents the collection as an experiment with short-story form.

How to choose among them
- For a city-centered collection: Shroff’s stories focus on Mumbai; Sidhu’s novel unfolds in Delhi.
- For translated fiction: Rohekar’s novel is translated from Hindi by Madhu Singh, while Unni R’s stories are translated from Malayalam by J Devika.
- For questions of identity and social power: consider Rohekar’s family saga, Tripathi’s account of trauma and disappearance, or Unni R’s stories of caste and power.
- For love and loss: Chandramouli’s novel follows two women connected to the same man.
- For several perspectives on urban life: Shroff’s collection offers distinct protagonists and predicaments rather than one continuous city narrative.
