Dean Martin’s son Dean Paul Martin—known as Dino—died at 35 when the F-4 fighter jet he was flying crashed in the San Bernardino Mountains in 1987. People close to Dean Martin later described the loss as devastating and said he never fully recovered. Those accounts come from his publicist, friends, his daughter Deana, and a reporter—not from a direct public statement by Martin about his grief.

Who was Dean Martin’s “golden boy”?

Dean Paul Martin was Dean Martin’s son, an entertainer and an Air National Guard pilot. A 2024 Remind feature used “golden boy” in its headline and attributed the phrase to Martin. The feature also quoted Martin expressing pride in his son, but it did not establish a dated original interview for that exact wording. It is therefore best understood as the feature’s framing or an attributed recollection, rather than a phrase independently confirmed in contemporaneous reporting. Remind’s 2024 feature

In the quotation reproduced by Remind, Martin said he was proud of his son and called him “a good boy.” That statement conveys affection and pride; it does not, on its own, verify the “golden boy” phrase or provide evidence about Martin’s later grief.

What happened to Dean Paul Martin?

On March 23, 1987, the Los Angeles Times reported that an F-4 flown by Dean Paul Martin was missing. The paper identified him as a captain and reported that an Air National Guard officer said he had more than 400 hours of F-4 piloting time. At the time the story appeared, the aircraft had not yet been found. Los Angeles Times, March 23, 1987

Deana Martin later recalled that she learned on March 21 that her 35-year-old brother was missing. In her 2008 profile for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), she said searchers found the jet five days later after it had crashed into a mountain during a snowstorm. That recovery timeline comes from her later account, not the newspaper’s initial missing-aircraft report. AOPA, July 5, 2008

What do sources say about Dean Martin’s reaction?

The clearest evidence is what people around Martin said about him. In the immediate aftermath of the disappearance, his publicist Warren Cowan told the Los Angeles Times he was “sure the family is devastated.” That was a comment about the family’s response while the aircraft was still reported missing, not a first-person account from Martin. Los Angeles Times, March 23, 1987

In its 1995 obituary for Dean Martin, the Los Angeles Times quoted Cowan and other friends saying, “I don’t think [Dean] ever quite recovered from the death of his son.” Deana Martin likewise told AOPA that her father retired and “never really recovered” from the loss. These are attributed judgments from people who knew him; neither source quotes Martin describing his own feelings. Los Angeles Times, December 26, 1995 AOPA, July 5, 2008

In 2024, former reporter William Keck recalled that Martin’s final years were “very, very sad after he lost his son.” Fox News identified Keck’s memoir as the source of his recollections. This adds a later observer’s perspective, but it remains Keck’s account rather than contemporaneous documentation of Martin’s private thoughts. Fox News, July 13, 2024

How firm is the account of his grief?

The sources support a careful conclusion: people close to Martin described him as profoundly affected by Dean Paul’s death, and some said he never recovered. They do not establish a definitive first-person confession by Martin or show that grief alone caused his retirement, health, or any other later outcome. The obituary records his death in 1995 at age 78, but the sources do not establish a medical or causal link between his bereavement and those later events. Los Angeles Times, December 26, 1995

The accounts serve different purposes. The 1987 newspaper report is strongest for the missing aircraft and immediate public comment; the 1995 obituary preserves friends’ retrospective assessment; Deana Martin’s AOPA profile supplies a family recollection; and Keck’s 2024 comments are a reporter’s later memories. Together they illuminate how others perceived Martin’s loss without turning that perception into a diagnosis or claiming access to his private thoughts.
