Dean Cain said in August 2025 that he would be sworn in as an ICE agent “ASAP.” But the Department of Homeland Security described the planned designation differently: a DHS spokesperson told the Associated Press that Cain would become an “honorary ICE Officer.” The reports did not establish that Cain took an operational ICE agent job, and the duties of the honorary role were not immediately clear.
What Cain said about joining ICE
After posting a video promoting ICE career opportunities, Cain said he had spoken with agency officials. In an interview with Fox News host Jesse Watters, he said: “So now I’ve spoken with some officials over at Ice, and I will be sworn in as an Ice agent, ASAP.” CBS News reported the statement on August 7, 2025: CBS News coverage.
The phrasing was Cain’s description of what he expected to happen. It was not, by itself, confirmation that he had been hired into a regular ICE agent position.
How DHS characterized the planned role
DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin told the Associated Press that Cain would instead be sworn in as an “honorary ICE Officer” in the coming month. AP reported that the duties of this honorary designation were not immediately clear: Associated Press report.

| Account | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Cain’s statement to Jesse Watters | Cain said he expected to be sworn in as an “ICE agent” as soon as possible. | It does not confirm that he entered an operational ICE agent role. |
| DHS spokesperson’s account to AP | McLaughlin described the planned designation as an “honorary ICE Officer.” | AP said the honorary role’s duties were not immediately clear. |
The descriptions should not be treated as interchangeable. The available reports do not explain what authority or responsibilities, if any, the honorary title carried.
What Cain said about his background and motivation
According to AP, Cain said in the Fox News interview that he was already a sworn deputy sheriff and a reserve police officer. That account of his prior service does not establish that he qualified for, or performed the duties of, a new operational ICE position.

Cain framed his interest in terms of patriotism and public service. The Guardian quoted his remarks from the interview; these are Cain’s stated reasons, not an independent assessment of his motives: The Guardian’s report. Separately, DHS said Cain was encouraging Americans to answer the call to join ICE and help protect communities. CBS quoted the department’s statement: “Superman is encouraging Americans to become real-life superheroes by answering their country’s call to join the brave men and women of ICE to help protect our communities to arrest the worst of the worst.”
The announcement came during an ICE recruitment push
CBS and AP reported that DHS was removing age limits for new applicants as ICE sought to expand hiring. That timing provides context for Cain’s recruitment video and the agency’s response, but the reports do not show that the policy change determined his eligibility or the nature of his planned role.

What remains unclear
- The reports do not specify the duties or authority associated with the honorary designation.
- They do not establish whether Cain later began serving in a regular, operational ICE agent role.
For readers asking whether Cain was actually becoming an ICE agent, the careful answer is that he said he would be sworn in as one, while DHS described the planned role to AP as honorary. The reported information does not resolve the difference beyond that distinction.
