In the October 24, 2025 episode of Deadliest Catch, rival captains Jake Anderson and Keith Colburn join forces against trawlers that could damage their crab pots. Their alliance is startling because they are also competing for productive fishing grounds: Jake shares a promising spot, then worries Keith could take it over. The episode’s audacious pot tactic makes “most unhinged” an entertaining headline—but no source establishes it as the strangest team-up in the show’s history.
Why Jake and Keith’s alliance is surprising
TV Insider’s October 24, 2025 recap frames the partnership as a practical reversal between competitors. Jake Anderson, associated in the recap with the Titan Explorer, and Keith Colburn, associated with the Wizard, are both looking for productive fishing. They agree to share information, but Jake soon finds a promising spot and worries he may have given a rival an advantage. His reaction, as transcribed by TV Insider, is: “I think I screwed up. I don’t need a partner for this. I need more pots.”
That tension does not disappear when they cooperate. It gives the team-up its edge: Jake and Keith remain rivals, but a threat to both crews’ gear gives them a reason to act together.
How the trawler threat brings them together
According to TV Insider’s account, a deckhand injures his arm, and Jake heads back to town. Before leaving, he tells Keith about the fishing spot; Keith agrees to check Jake’s gear and tighten it while he is away. Keith then spots a trawler whose nets could damage their crab gear. The recap describes the vessel as a 300-foot trawler.

The captains coordinate a deterrent using empty pots placed tightly together. TV Insider describes the arrangement as “10 pots to a mile overlapping.” The recap says the first trawler avoids the setup, while another passes through during the next attempt; the trawlers then turn around, and the captains return to fishing. These are details reported in the recap, not independently verified observations.
What makes the tactic feel so audacious
The tactic turns the captains’ shared vulnerability into cooperation. The recap presents them as trying to protect equipment that could be caught or damaged by trawler nets, while the overlapping empty pots create a visible deterrent. It is an unusual image for a partnership between competing crab captains, but the account does not establish the arrangement as a general fishing practice or explain its effectiveness beyond this episode.

Jake’s own lines, as quoted by TV Insider, underline how uneasy he remains about the arrangement. He says, “I jumped in bed with the monster…Hopefully he plays nice.” The recap also quotes him saying his ideas would “land us in jail really quick.” Those remarks are episode dialogue as transcribed by the outlet, rather than independently checked transcript quotations.
Is it really the most unhinged team-up in show history?
That description works as opinion, not as a documented ranking. The available account supports calling this a surprising, temporary alliance: Jake and Keith share information, help protect each other’s gear, and face a common threat, even as competition over fishing grounds remains part of the story. It does not compare the partnership with every past alliance on Deadliest Catch, so there is no basis to present “most unhinged in show history” as an established fact.

Episode listings and where to check availability
TV Insider’s October 24 recap covers the Jake–Keith trawler story. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide connects the trawler battle with its October 24 listing for “Brute Force Fishery,” and describes a subsequent installment, “Bring Out the Monster,” as involving guerrilla tactics against a factory trawler. The guide has conflicting episode numbers and titles elsewhere. Discovery+ Canada lists its own sequence of 16 Season 21 episode titles, so episode numbering can differ by listing and region. The safest reference is the October 24 episode or recap rather than a universal episode number.
For viewing, check listings in your country: the Prime Video Season 21 page consulted for this article currently says the video is unavailable, while discovery+ Canada has a season page and episode list. Streaming availability and catalogs can change, and the Canada listing does not establish availability elsewhere.
