DC’s September 2025 Batman series is the fourth launch of the flagship solo Batman comic with a new issue #1 under a specific count: it includes the 2011 New 52 and 2016 Rebirth relaunches, but not every Batman title or continuity shift. The distinction matters because Batman himself first appeared in 1939, while his solo comic began in 1940.
What “fourth relaunch” counts
The count tracks the main solo Batman ongoing comic restarting at issue #1. It does not count every Batman-related series, miniseries, or change to DC continuity. In this chronology, the new series is the fourth such launch since the solo title began.
| Year | Batman #1 launch | Publishing context |
|---|---|---|
| 1940 | The first solo Batman title began with Batman #1. | The solo comic’s starting point, following Batman’s 1939 debut in Detective Comics #27. DC’s character history. |
| 2011 | The New 52 Batman #1. | Part of the publishing initiative that followed the Flashpoint reset. DC’s character history. |
| 2016 | The Rebirth Batman #1. | Launched in the context of the DC Universe: Rebirth event. DC’s character history. |
| 2025 | The Matt Fraction and Jorge Jiménez series, beginning with Batman #1 in September. | The fourth launch in this count; the relaunch claim is about the flagship title, not a count of all Batman books. Gizmodo’s February 21, 2025 announcement report. |
That is why “almost 85 years” refers to the solo comic’s 1940 starting point and the 2025 launch window. Batman’s character history reaches back to 1939, but the character’s debut and the beginning of the solo title are different milestones. DC’s official history gives both dates.
What changed with the 2025 series
A new creative team
Matt Fraction writes the series, Jorge Jiménez draws it, Tomeu Morey colors it, and Clayton Cowles letters it, according to the contemporaneous ComicsPRO announcement coverage. Gizmodo reported the announcement on February 21, 2025.

A refreshed look for Batman and Gotham
Jiménez described the visual direction as bringing back Batman’s blue suit in a definitive way, with blue, grey, and yellow accents. He also said he was developing a distinct visual identity for Gotham, aiming for a slight pop influence while retaining the city’s dark, ominous character. These were details announced in February 2025; they describe the reveal, not a guarantee that every design or plan remained unchanged afterward. Gizmodo’s announcement report.
At that announcement, DC had not shared full details of a new Batmobile or a broader Gotham redesign. That is what was known then, rather than a statement about later plans.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the relaunch count is narrower than Batman’s publishing history
DC’s publishing eras can involve broader continuity initiatives, but those are not interchangeable with a new #1 for the main solo title. The New 52 and Rebirth give context to the 2011 and 2016 issues; the four-launch count remains a count of flagship Batman issue #1 starts, not a tally of every reboot, relaunch, or Batman comic.
