He was 71. His wife and band manager, Kiersty Boon, told The Washington Post that he died from complications of kidney disease; Pere Ubu’s statement described his death as following a long illness.
Who was David Thomas?
Thomas was a singer, lyricist and central creative force in Pere Ubu, the Cleveland band he helped form in 1975. He had earlier been part of Rocket From the Tombs, a Cleveland group that preceded Pere Ubu. Thomas remained the band’s enduring member and leader through repeated lineup changes; The Washington Post reported that more than 20 musicians played in Pere Ubu over its history.

The band’s name came from Père Ubu, a character in the absurdist plays of French writer Alfred Jarry. Its first single, “30 Seconds Over Tokyo,” appeared in 1975. Pere Ubu released its debut album, The Modern Dance, in 1978, followed later that year by Dub Housing.
What made Pere Ubu’s music distinctive?
Pere Ubu joined dissonant, experimental textures to rock structures and pop-conscious songwriting. Thomas and the band described the approach as “avant-garage.” The result could be abrasive and strange without abandoning melody or song form. Thomas resisted the idea that the group should simply repeat a fixed sound, telling The Washington Post: “The ‘sound’ never changes. You change. The world changes. We don’t change.”

The group’s uncompromising approach earned it lasting influence rather than broad mainstream success. Artists associated with its influence include Sonic Youth, Gang of Four, R.E.M. and the Pixies. New York Times critic Robert Palmer captured the band’s unusual position in 1986: “Pere Ubu was either ahead of its time or out of step altogether.”

- The phenomenal single from 1976 that kick started Ohio s reaction to punk rock. A bleak and morbid worldview that ensured the new wave and the cold war would collide in post punk acrimony. Listed on Rate Your Music as anxious, misanthropic, futuristic, noisy, male vocals, suicide, rebellious, alienation . A must have from a band who reinvented music in their own image. A 1000 pressing recreating their second Hearpen single, sounding just as revolutionary many moons later. A Final Solution. B Cloud 149...

What was unfinished when Thomas died?
At the time of the 2025 reports, Thomas was recording an album he understood would be his last, had nearly finished an autobiography and had directed the ongoing cataloging of Pere Ubu live-show tapes. The band said it planned to complete the album and autobiography. Those were plans reported at the time, not confirmation that either project was subsequently completed or released. The live recordings are represented in the band’s official archive at Pere Ubu’s Bandcamp.
