These terms describe different parts of the reported sequence: cardiac arrest was the immediate cause, COPD the underlying condition, and dehydration a contributing factor. Describing the reported finding simply as death from dehydration or emphysema would leave out those distinctions.
What was known when his family announced his death?
Lynch’s family announced his death on January 16, 2025, when he was 78. The family’s statement did not disclose a cause. The Associated Press reported that the cause and location were not then available; the certificate details were reported later. The AP’s January 16 report reproduced the family’s words: “There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us.”

How does his emphysema diagnosis fit in?
Before his death, Lynch had publicly discussed emphysema and its effects on his mobility. In remarks from August 2024, reported by ABC News on January 16, 2025, he said, “I’m homebound whether I like it or not.” ABC also reported that he said he could walk only a short distance before running out of oxygen. The Independent reported that Lynch had been diagnosed with emphysema in 2020.
That public diagnosis provides context for the reported COPD entry, but it should not be substituted for the cause sequence reported from the certificate.
