David Lynch’s work ranges from short experimental films and unsettling features to television built around the mystery of Twin Peaks. This guide separates movies, TV projects, and online work, while noting that no single list captures every role he held.
David Lynch movies and short films
The list below combines Lynch’s notable films with the short and experimental works recorded in BAFTA’s historical filmography. BAFTA describes its inventory as covering writer, producer, and director credits; it is not a complete record of every kind of work he did. It also omits Dune at Lynch’s request, so that feature is included separately.
| Year | Title | Format or note |
|---|---|---|
| 1966 | Six Men Getting Sick | Short film |
| 1968 | The Alphabet | Short film |
| 1970 | The Grandmother | Short film |
| 1974 | The Amputee | Short film |
| 1977 | Eraserhead | Feature film |
| 1980 | The Elephant Man | Feature film |
| 1984 | Dune | Feature film; omitted from BAFTA’s list at Lynch’s request |
| 1986 | Blue Velvet | Feature film |
| 1988 | The Cowboy and the Frenchman | Short film |
| 1990 | Wild at Heart | Feature film |
| 1990 | Industrial Symphony No. 1: The Dream of the Brokenhearted | Performance film |
| 1992 | Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me | Feature film; companion to the television series |
| 1996 | Lumière: Premonitions Following an Evil Deed | Short film |
| 1997 | Lost Highway | Feature film |
| 1999 | The Straight Story | Feature film |
| 2001 | Mulholland Drive | Feature film |
| 2006 | INLAND EMPIRE | Feature film |
Some titles resist neat categories, and this table is not a role-by-role credit list. For example, BAFTA lists Crumb (1994) as a production credit rather than a Lynch-directed film. The Academy Film Archive’s collection spans student films and later features; its collection page records approximately 660 items received in 2007, not 660 films.

Twin Peaks (1990–1991) and The Return (2017)
Twin Peaks, created in collaboration with Mark Frost, is Lynch’s central television work. Set in a small Washington town, the series begins with the mystery surrounding the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer. Its blend of surreal turns, oddball humor, and danger makes it both a crime mystery and a distinctive, unsettling small-town drama. Lynch’s involvement does not mean he alone created or directed every episode.

The original series was followed by Lynch’s feature Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992), which focuses on Laura Palmer’s final days, and then the television continuation Twin Peaks: The Return (2017). Criterion describes the film as a prequel to the series; the later TV season continues the story.
Other television projects
- American Chronicles (1990): BAFTA credits Lynch as producer and director.
- On the Air (1992): BAFTA credits him as writer, producer, and director.
- Hotel Room (1993): BAFTA credits him as director.
These shorter-lived projects are useful for viewers who want to explore beyond Twin Peaks; they are not equivalent in scale or status to the long-running mystery series.

Online series and other short-form work
BAFTA distinguishes several web-era works from feature films. Rabbits (2002) and Dumbland (2002) are listed as online series, while Darkened Room (2002) is identified as a short. They belong in a broad account of Lynch’s screen work, but not in a feature-film list.
A complete career inventory would also need to cover music videos, commercials, acting, animation, cinematography, editing, executive producing, and sound design. BAFTA’s stated scope and the Academy Film Archive’s collection are helpful institutional references, but neither supplies a definitive total of every Lynch credit.

Where to start with David Lynch
There is no objective best first choice: format, appetite for ambiguity, and tolerance for disturbing material matter. The BFI’s guide offers Twin Peaks for a viewer open to a serialized mystery with surreal comedy, and Blue Velvet as a feature-film route into Lynch’s style.
| If you want… | Try… | Why it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| A longer story and an unusual mystery | Twin Peaks | It combines a murder investigation with a surreal, comic, and often threatening small-town world. |
| A feature-film introduction | Blue Velvet | BFI recommends it as a strong feature-first entry point. |
| A more grounded story | The Straight Story | BFI identifies it as unusually grounded compared with Lynch’s other features. |
| A demanding, fragmented film | INLAND EMPIRE | BFI highlights its three-hour length and fractured structure; it can be a daunting starting point. |
| More varied features after an introduction | Wild at Heart, Lost Highway, Eraserhead, or Mulholland Drive | BFI’s guide discusses these as works that develop different sides of Lynch’s filmmaking. |
For physical viewing, Paramount announced Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery on Blu-ray with every episode of the complete television series, both versions of the pilot, and Fire Walk with Me. That announcement describes the collection’s contents, not its current stock or disc-region compatibility. Criterion lists a 4K UHD disc and Blu-ray for Fire Walk with Me, and physical editions for Mulholland Drive and Eraserhead. Streaming and rental catalogs vary by territory and date; BFI Player’s Lynch page listed Dune, Mulholland Drive, and The Elephant Man for rental when checked for the cited listing, but availability should be confirmed locally.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Lynch’s filmography is hard to reduce to a list
Lynch worked across formats and roles, and even institutional lists use different boundaries. BAFTA’s inventory provides a useful historic account of selected writing, producing, and directing credits, while explicitly omitting Dune at Lynch’s request. The Academy Film Archive documents a collection spanning early student work through later features. The Academy also lists three Best Director Oscar nominations and one Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for The Elephant Man; those are award-credit counts, not a complete award history or a measure of his full body of work.
