Letterman wondered whether she could carry a 90-minute concert in Japanese; Swift clarified that she had memorized some phrases and worked out what they meant. The exchange is a charming example of prepared crowd greetings—not evidence that she was fluent or could hold a full conversation in Japanese.
Why Letterman was taken aback
Swift described trying to adapt when she performs for audiences who speak another language. In the transcript, she says she learns a few phrases and speaks Japanese during shows in Japan. Letterman’s follow-up turns the casual claim into a joke about whether she could sustain an entire 90-minute concert in Japanese.
Swift’s answer supplies the important context: “Well, I mean, you just—you just memorize some of it and you figure out what it means and you say—” The wording is attributed to her by a user-uploaded transcript, not an official network transcript, so it should be treated as a transcript’s account rather than a verified verbatim quotation. What Japanese phrases did she use?
The transcript records Swift offering brief, audience-facing expressions, including “Tanoshii ne, Osaka!”, “Arigatou gozaimasu!”, “Nippon daisuki,” “Nippon saikou!” and “Kawaii!” It glosses them respectively as asking whether Osaka is having fun, thanking the audience, saying she loves Japan, saying Japan is awesome, and “Cute.” These are short phrases suited to addressing a crowd; the transcript does not show her conducting a conversation or delivering a concert in Japanese.

The transcript’s romanization and punctuation are not a formal language assessment, and its examples should be checked against the clip if exact wording matters. EnglishCentral also catalogs a clip titled “Taylor Swift Speaks Japanese” and describes her demonstrating Japanese to Letterman, but its listing does not establish the segment’s original air date or provide an authoritative transcript. See EnglishCentral’s clip listing.
Other public uses of Japanese
Separate Japanese-media reports are consistent with Swift using short expressions in public, but they do not establish broad fluency. A Taylor Swift Brasil fan-site recap dated February 19, 2010, says she used greetings including “yoroshiku” and “arigatou gozaimasu” during a Japanese TV interview. Read the fan-site recap.

In a November 11, 2014 report about a Tokyo press conference, MANTANWEB says Swift greeted attendees with “Nihon, daisuki” (“Japan, I love you”) and mentioned “moriagatteru?” as a favorite Japanese phrase. That report, too, documents public expressions rather than a proficiency assessment. Read MANTANWEB’s report.

The Japanese-language anecdote should not be confused with Swift’s separate October 2014 appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, when she promoted 1989 and performed “Welcome to New York.” The Los Angeles Times covered that later visit; it is a different Letterman appearance from the Japanese-language exchange.
