David Gail, the actor associated with Beverly Hills, 90210 and Port Charles, died on January 16, 2024, at 58. His family first announced complications from sudden cardiac arrest, then later provided a more detailed account describing an accidental intoxication-related cardiopulmonary arrest and resulting anoxic-ischemic brain injury.
David Gail, the American actor known for playing Stuart Carson on Beverly Hills, 90210 and Dr. Joe Scanlon on Port Charles, died on January 16, 2024, at age 58. His death was first announced as resulting from complications of sudden cardiac arrest. A later statement from a representative of his family gave a more detailed medical account, describing anoxic-ischemic encephalopathy after cardiopulmonary arrest caused by accidental drug intoxication involving amphetamines, cocaine, ethanol and fentanyl.
Gail’s career was concentrated in television, particularly serialized dramas, primetime soaps, syndicated programs and daytime series. Although his role on Beverly Hills, 90210 was recurring rather than a lead part, he later held one of his most substantial television credits as Dr. Joe Scanlon on the daytime spinoff Port Charles.
David Gail’s role on Beverly Hills, 90210
Gail played Stuart Carson, Brenda Walsh’s fiancé, during the show’s fourth-season-era storyline in 1993–1994. Stuart was part of Brenda’s relationship arc as she moved through the heightened personal and family conflicts that defined the series.

The credit is sometimes overstated in online summaries. Gail was not a regular lead across the entire series and did not appear in every episode. His best-known connection to Beverly Hills, 90210 was a recurring storyline, supplemented by an earlier guest appearance as Tom in the episode “A Fling in Palm Springs.”
Dr. Joe Scanlon on Port Charles
Gail’s largest documented television role was Dr. Joe Scanlon on Port Charles, the daytime soap and General Hospital spinoff. Cast records credit him with 216 episodes from 1999 to 2000.
Joe Scanlon was a physician and part of the Scanlon family storyline. Gail was the second actor to play the character, an important distinction because some brief biographies incorrectly imply that he originated the role. His extended run on Port Charles gave him a much deeper presence in a continuing television narrative than his shorter Beverly Hills, 90210 appearance.

What was reported about David Gail’s death?
Gail’s death was publicly confirmed in January 2024 by publicist Linda Brown on behalf of his family. The initial statement said that he had been found unresponsive, received CPR and defibrillation, and was placed on life support for several days. It described his death on January 16 as resulting from complications of sudden cardiac arrest.

A later statement from a representative for Gail’s family clarified the medical circumstances. Reports citing that statement said he suffered anoxic-ischemic encephalopathy—a form of brain injury caused by insufficient oxygenated blood flow—after resuscitation from cardiopulmonary arrest. The statement attributed the arrest to drug intoxication involving amphetamines, cocaine, ethanol and fentanyl and said the death was ruled accidental.
These accounts should be read as a chronology rather than as incompatible explanations. The first announcement summarized the immediate medical event; the later family-representative statement supplied the more specific medical description and manner of death. No additional speculation about Gail’s personal history is warranted beyond what his family representatives disclosed.
A statement attributed to Gail’s mother said that he had become reliant on medication after multiple surgeries involving his hands and wrists. That family context has been reported, but it does not establish a broader account of his health or substance use, and it should not be expanded beyond the family’s wording.
