Some messages were acknowledged as genuine by Beckham’s team, which also said other material had been doctored. The reports were disputed, and they did not establish that every email in the published cache was authentic.
What happened in the Beckham email controversy?
In December 2016, the High Court issued an injunction preventing The Sunday Times from publishing details of Beckham’s private emails. The court accepted that the messages, written by Beckham and his public-relations advisers, had been stolen from a Portuguese company associated with his spokesman, Simon Oliveira. European outlets published details of the cache in February 2017 despite the injunction. The Guardian’s account and Reuters’ report described the leak and the surrounding dispute.

The controversy concerned private correspondence, not a public statement by Beckham. Reporting connected the messages to his disappointment over not receiving a knighthood in 2013 and to questions raised about his tax affairs. The reporting does not establish that the honours committee’s concerns were the sole reason he missed out.
What did the leaked emails reportedly say about the knighthood?
Reports described Beckham as angry that he had not received a knighthood in 2013. One reported message included an insult directed at the honours committee. The Guardian said Beckham’s team confirmed that particular insult was genuine, while also saying that some published emails had been doctored, including by adding swearwords. His representatives characterized the messages as heat-of-the-moment exchanges between close associates.

Beckham’s spokesperson rejected the overall portrayal. In a statement reported by ITV News on 4 February 2017, the spokesperson said: “This story is based on outdated material taken out of context from hacked and doctored private emails from a third party server and gives a deliberately inaccurate picture.”
What was reported about UNICEF, and how did the charity respond?
Some coverage said advisers had discussed billing UNICEF for a business-class flight to Cambodia. The Guardian reported that Beckham’s team later made clear this did not happen. UNICEF said it had not seen the emails and could not comment on them, so its response did not independently confirm or disprove the reported exchange.
UNICEF also spoke positively about Beckham’s work. In a statement reported by ITV News on 4 February 2017, it said he had given his time, energy and support to raise awareness and funds for children, and had personally given significant funds. The charity added: “We are extremely proud of the 7 Fund and all it has achieved for children.”
Were the leaked Beckham emails real?
The available accounts support a mixed answer, not a blanket verdict. Beckham’s team confirmed one reported insult about the honours committee as genuine and said some other emails had been doctored. Reuters said it could not independently verify the source of the emails. That means specific claims should be treated according to the evidence attached to them: some reported content was acknowledged by his team, while the authenticity of the whole cache was not independently established.

Was Beckham’s knighthood snub in 2014?
The reports about the disappointment place it in 2013. The “2014” date in some versions of the story is not supported by the reporting cited here. The leak and publication controversy itself belongs to February 2017, after a court injunction in December 2016.

Beckham did later receive a knighthood. The UK Government’s 2025 Birthday Honours announcement named David Robert Joseph Beckham OBE as a Knight Bachelor for services to sport and charity. The 2017 emails controversy is therefore a historical account of a past honours disappointment, not a description of his current status.
