In an interview reported by NBC News on April 10, 2025, he called it a “vicious rumor” and said, “I’m sad, and I wish we didn’t play any part in it.” He also acknowledged that his earlier denial of Barstool’s involvement was inaccurate, according to The Independent.
What did Dave Portnoy apologize for?
Portnoy expressed regret over Barstool Sports’ role in amplifying a false claim about Cornett, an Ole Miss student. NBC News attributed these words to Portnoy in an interview: “It’s a vicious rumor,” and “I’m sad, and I wish we didn’t play any part in it.” The remarks were an interview, not a written apology statement. The Independent separately reported that Portnoy said, “Morally we were wrong,” and that he wanted to apologize to Cornett.
The rumor falsely alleged that Cornett had a sexual relationship with her boyfriend’s father. Cornett denied the claim. It should not be treated as fact.
How did the rumor spread, and who was involved?
The accounts distinguish three separate actions. NBC News reported that ESPN broadcaster Pat McAfee discussed the rumor on his show without naming Cornett. It also reported that at least two people affiliated with Barstool later referred to it in social media posts that were deleted. Portnoy’s own role in the public response was to first deny Barstool’s involvement and later express regret about the company’s part in the story.

NBC said Portnoy had earlier told Rolling Stone that the rumor was likely fabricated and that Barstool did not control an employee’s personal posts. The Independent reported that Portnoy later acknowledged his denial was inaccurate. His later remarks did not make McAfee’s broadcast and the subsequent social posts the same action; they were separate events involving different people.
What did Cornett and her family say about the impact?
NBC News and Access Hollywood reported that Cornett and members of her family described serious personal fallout from the rumor. Those descriptions are their accounts of what they experienced, not the findings of a measured impact study. Cornett’s denial remains central: the allegation was false, and coverage of the controversy should not repeat it as though it were true.

The reports cited here were published April 10 and 11, 2025. They document Portnoy’s change from denying Barstool’s involvement to expressing regret, but do not establish whether legal proceedings or other developments followed.
