Dave Navarro’s return to Jane’s Addiction in 2024 and the completed album he made with Taylor Hawkins belong to two different musical chapters. Navarro said he, Hawkins and bassist Chris Chaney had mixed and mastered an NHC record before Hawkins died in March 2022. The recordings are sometimes described as “lost songs,” but the interviews establish that the album was completed—not that the songs disappeared or what later happened to the recordings.
Why did Dave Navarro rejoin Jane’s Addiction?
Navarro said the reunion’s central draw was playing again with the original lineup, especially bassist Eric Avery. In a Guitar World interview published November 25, 2024, he said he and Avery had a distinctive musical connection and that some reunion shows were among his favorites with the band.
Navarro also described a deliberate return to the group’s core sound. Rather than letting production details distract from the performance, the musicians sought the direct feel of Jane’s Addiction’s early club shows. The band’s May 2024 reunion at London’s Bush Hall led to songwriting, the release of “Imminent Redemption,” and a U.S. tour. GRAMMY.com characterized that tour as the first in 14 years with the original 1985 members: Navarro, Avery, vocalist Perry Farrell and drummer Stephen Perkins. GRAMMY.com’s 2024 interview with Navarro provides that chronology and context.
There is an important timing qualification: Guitar World’s November interview was conducted a few weeks before Jane’s Addiction’s September 13, 2024 Boston show, which ended in an onstage altercation involving Farrell and Navarro. The interview captures Navarro’s pre-incident view of the reunion; it should not be read as an update on the band’s status after that event.

Did Dave Navarro finish an album with Taylor Hawkins?
Yes. Navarro said that NHC—his group with Hawkins and bassist Chris Chaney—had completed a record and mixed and mastered it before Hawkins died in March 2022. Speaking to Guitar World in July 2024, Navarro put it plainly: “I’d just completed making a record with Taylor Hawkins and Chris Chaney [as supergroup NHC]. We mixed and mastered it, and then we lost Taylor.” The July 26, 2024 interview is the direct source for his account.
That account answers what happened to the project at the point Hawkins died: it had been recorded and brought through mixing and mastering. It does not establish whether the album or individual tracks were subsequently released, remain in a particular person’s custody, or are planned for release. So “lost Taylor Hawkins songs” can describe the grief attached to a finished project, but the available interviews do not show that the recordings themselves were lost, destroyed or unavailable.

Why did Navarro stop playing guitar for a time?
Navarro described two distinct factors rather than a single explanation. Long Covid affected his capacity to play live: he said the energy needed for a two-hour show had been beyond him during his illness. Separately, Hawkins’s death brought grief that made picking up a guitar painful. In the July 2024 Guitar World interview, Navarro said, “That was in the middle of Covid, and it was actually very painful for me to pick up the guitar after that.”
In a separate July 17, 2024 Guitar World report, Navarro also connected the NHC album and his grief-related hiatus. These are his descriptions of his own experience, not general medical guidance about Long Covid or grief. His later return to Jane’s Addiction came after both the health-related interruption and the period when playing was emotionally difficult.

How the two musical turning points differ
| Episode | When | What Navarro’s account establishes |
|---|---|---|
| NHC with Taylor Hawkins and Chris Chaney | The album was completed before Hawkins died in March 2022 | Navarro said the record was mixed and mastered. The cited interviews do not establish its later release or custody status. |
| Jane’s Addiction reunion with Eric Avery | Reunion performance in May 2024; single and U.S. tour followed | The original lineup returned to live performance and new material. Navarro said Avery’s return and the group’s renewed musical focus mattered to him. |
The NHC story is about a completed collaboration interrupted by a death; the Jane’s Addiction story is about Navarro returning to a longstanding band after an extended absence. Both involve a renewed relationship with music, but the sources support no conclusion about future NHC releases or Jane’s Addiction’s later plans.
