His own 1974 hit reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, while his songs were also recorded by artists across country, pop and soul. The Recording Academy lists four Grammy nominations for him, including one for “Please Come to Boston.”
Who was Dave Loggins?
Born David Allen Loggins in East Tennessee, Loggins began writing songs in high school and moved to Nashville in 1970. He released his debut album, Personal Belongings, in 1972, then built a career both as a recording artist and as a songwriter for other performers. MusicRow reported that songs he wrote or co-wrote accounted for 14 No. 1 country hits and 25 top-ten successes across formats; those totals are MusicRow’s career accounting.
“Please Come to Boston” and his recording career
Loggins’s signature recording, “Please Come to Boston,” appeared on his album Apprentice (In a Musical Workshop) and became a major hit in 1974. The Los Angeles Times reported that it peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the adult contemporary chart. MusicRow likewise described it as a No. 1 adult contemporary hit and a No. 5 pop hit; chart labels reflect the sources’ respective accounts.
The song earned Loggins a 1975 Grammy nomination for Male Pop Vocal Performance. He later recorded “Nobody Loves Me Like You Do” with Anne Murray. The Recording Academy lists the duet among their 1985 Grammy nominations, and the Academy of Country Music described it as a No. 1 country duet that also brought the pair CMA recognition.
