Dave Ball, the musician and producer who formed Soft Cell with singer Marc Almond, died at 66 at his London home on October 22, 2025. Representatives said he died peacefully in his sleep; the reports did not give a cause of death. Ball helped shape the synth-led sound behind “Tainted Love,” one of Soft Cell’s defining hits, and later found success with electronic duo The Grid.
What is known about Dave Ball’s death
Soft Cell confirmed Ball’s death, according to Official Charts. He was 66 and died at his London home on October 22, 2025. Representatives told The Irish Times that he died peacefully in his sleep. The Los Angeles Times also reported his death; neither account stated a cause.
Who was Dave Ball?
Ball was the instrumental and production half of Soft Cell, the English synth-pop duo he formed with vocalist Marc Almond. Born in Chester in 1959 and raised in Blackpool, he studied art at Leeds Polytechnic, where he met Almond. The Irish Times dates the formation of Soft Cell to 1979.
Almond’s tribute captured the personal and musical partnership: “He was a wonderfully brilliant musical genius … Thank you Dave for being an immense part of my life and for the music you gave me. I wouldn’t be where I am without you,” he said, in comments reported by The Irish Times.

How “Tainted Love” made Soft Cell a global act
Soft Cell’s 1981 cover of Gloria Jones’s “Tainted Love” became the duo’s signature hit. It topped the UK singles chart for two weeks and was the country’s best-selling single of 1981, according to Official Charts. The Irish Times reported that it reached No. 1 in 16 other countries and entered the US top 10.
The record’s impact rested on the contrast between Almond’s expressive vocal and Ball’s stark, electronic arrangement. Ball’s role was not simply to provide accompaniment: his synth-led musical approach was central to the sound that made the cover distinctive.

He published his memoir, Electronic Boy: My Life in and Out of Soft Cell, in 2020, offering a first-person account of his life and career.

Soft Cell’s final album and what is confirmed
After Ball’s death, Almond said the pair had completed a new Soft Cell album only days earlier and that Ball had heard the finished record. In a June 2026 report, RTÉ described Danceteria as the sixth and final Soft Cell studio album, co-written and produced by Ball, and reported a planned September 2026 release. That report establishes the announcement and plan, but not whether the album was ultimately released as scheduled or what formats are currently available.
