Accounts featured in the series describe violence and killings attributed to LeBaron, but those claims should be distinguished from established court outcomes: ABC News reports that a Mexican conviction connected to his brother Joel’s 1972 killing was later overturned by a higher court.
Who was Ervil Morrell LeBaron?
LeBaron led a splinter group of Mormon fundamentalists that operated in his name, according to ABC News Studios. The group is the focus of Daughters of the Cult, which follows its history through accounts from people connected to it. Describing the group precisely matters: it was a splinter group, not a representation of Latter-day Saints generally.

The available reporting identifies LeBaron as a polygamous cult leader, but does not establish a complete biography, a comprehensive timeline of the group, or reliable totals for his wives, children, or killings. Those numbers should not be inferred from the documentary’s subject or its title.
What happened in the case involving his brother Joel?
ABC News reports that LeBaron was convicted in a Mexican court in connection with the 1972 killing of his brother Joel, and that a higher court overturned that conviction. The overturned conviction is not a final conviction. The reporting cited here does not provide a complete court record, so it does not support further claims about the proceedings or their legal basis.

What do the sisters’ accounts say?
ABC News reports that sisters Anna and Celia LeBaron recount experiences connected to the group in the documentary. According to the sisters, their half-sister Rebecca was believed to have been murdered while pregnant after expressing interest in leaving. That account should remain attributed to them: the cited reporting does not establish a court finding about the circumstances of Rebecca’s death.
More broadly, the series includes accounts of violence and killings allegedly ordered by LeBaron. These are allegations as presented in the reporting and participants’ accounts; they should not be recast as proven findings where the cited sources do not establish that status.
What is Daughters of the Cult?
Daughters of the Cult is a five-episode documentary from ABC News Studios, directed by Sara Mast, according to the American Film Institute’s catalog. Hulu describes it as a story told through people who were there. It is a documentary, not a dramatized scripted series.
ABC News Studios described the series as including stories of people who escaped and began anew. Its December 2023 announcement said: “Despite running from the FBI for most of their young lives, there is triumph and healing for the brave few men and women who escaped and began anew.” This is institutional language from the announcement, not a quotation attributed to an individual.
