Data and the original Terminator share an artificial-being theme, but they serve opposite purposes in their stories. Data is a Starfleet officer who seeks understanding, creativity and autonomy; the Terminator in the 1984 film is an assassin Skynet sends to kill Sarah Connor. There is no canonical encounter in the sources available, so “who would win?” has no official answer.
Who is Data?
Data is an android officer aboard the Enterprise-D in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The series ran for seven seasons and 178 episodes from 1987 to 1994, with Data among its cast. StarTrek.com lists the series and its run information.
His story centers on trying to understand humanity and develop as an individual. StarTrek.com also describes his interests in theatre, music and art. That makes him more than a machine serving a task: his curiosity, relationships and choices are part of his character arc.
Who is the Terminator?
In the original The Terminator (1984), Skynet sends a Terminator back to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor before she gives birth to the future resistance leader. The machine’s role is defined by its mission: eliminate a target and alter the future.

The British Film Institute describes the film as combining slasher elements with high-tech horror, built around an AI that initiates nuclear war and sends a robot assassin through time. The BFI’s film entry provides that context.
Data and the Terminator compared
| Question | Data | Original Terminator |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Serves as a Starfleet officer while pursuing understanding of humanity. | Sent by Skynet to kill Sarah Connor. |
| Agency and character | An individual whose learning, relationships and autonomy are central to his story. | An assassin whose actions are driven by a specific mission. |
| Story role | A continuing member of the Enterprise-D crew. | The threat at the center of a time-travel action-horror story. |
| Relationship to humanity | Seeks to understand human behavior and culture. | Acts against humans as part of Skynet’s war. |
| Setting | Star Trek: The Next Generation. | The original 1984 The Terminator. |
The contrast is also visible in how the stories use artificial beings. Data’s difference from a human creates questions about identity and belonging. The Terminator’s difference makes it a relentless, frightening instrument of violence. Director Rob Bowman, discussing the contrast between Data and Lore in an official StarTrek.com interview, described Data as dependable and governed by strict behavioral parameters, while Lore is “behaviorally unlocked and unrestricted.” That observation concerns two characters within Star Trek, not a comparison with the Terminator, but it underscores how the franchise makes an android’s behavior part of the drama. Who would win in a fight?
There is no canonical result, and the available official material establishes separate fictional contexts rather than a crossover. A fair hypothetical would first have to specify which version of Data and which Terminator model are involved, what equipment they have, and the conditions of the encounter. Without those choices, a definitive winner would be guesswork rather than a franchise fact.
“The Terminator” is not one unchanging character across every film. For example, Paramount’s page for Terminator: Dark Fate describes a later story involving Sarah Connor and identifies a T-800 called Carl. That later characterization should not be silently substituted for the original film’s assassin. See Paramount’s Dark Fate page.
