Dark Winds is a crime-noir drama about Navajo Tribal Police officers Joe Leaphorn, Jim Chee and Bernadette Manuelito investigating cases in the 1970s. It is based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee novels. Season 4 premiered in February 2026 and is reported streaming on Netflix; AMC says Season 5 is planned for 2027.
What is Dark Winds about?
The series follows Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, Jim Chee and Bernadette Manuelito of the Navajo Tribal Police as they investigate crimes in the 1970s. AMC described the first season as set in 1971 near Monument Valley; the showrunner has described the series as a crime story set on the Navajo Nation in 1972. The setting and cases give the show its crime-noir frame, rooted in a specific place and community rather than a generic police procedural. AMC’s series announcement and its 2026 Season 5 announcement provide those descriptions.
Season 4’s announced story sends the officers searching for a missing Navajo girl, with the investigation taking them from the Navajo Nation to 1970s Los Angeles. That premise is a starting point for the season, not a substitute for watching the preceding cases and character development.
Is Dark Winds based on a book?
Yes. The series is based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee novels, and Graham Roland created the television adaptation. That connection makes the books a natural next step if you want more stories featuring Leaphorn and Chee. The available announcements establish the series-level source material, but do not establish that each television season adapts one specific novel. AMC identifies the book series and creator in its 2025 announcement; the New Mexico Film Office’s 2021 production announcement also identifies Hillerman’s novels as the source.

Is Dark Winds coming back for Season 5?
Yes. AMC renewed the series for an eight-episode fifth season, planned to debut in 2027. AMC’s February 5, 2026 announcement said filming would begin in Santa Fe in March 2026, but did not give a specific premiere date. Treat 2027 as the announced plan, not a dated release schedule. Check AMC’s renewal announcement for updates.
Where was the series filmed?
The first-season production was based in New Mexico. The New Mexico Film Office’s August 31, 2021 announcement listed filming around Santa Fe, Española, Pueblo of Cochiti, Pueblo of Tesuque and the Navajo Nation. It projected approximately 200 New Mexico crew members and more than 275 local background performers and extras for that production; those were estimates for the first season, not figures for later seasons.

Start with Season 1 if you want the character relationships and investigations in order. For viewers joining at Season 4, AMC’s stated catch-up coverage on AMC+ provides a route to the earlier seasons. If you are more interested in the literary source, look for Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee novels; the series is based on that body of work, though the cited sources do not map each season to an individual book.
