Las danzas tradicionales de Guatemala son expresiones diversas, vinculadas a comunidades, regiones, idiomas y prácticas ceremoniales propias. El Rabinal Achí, de la comunidad achí de Rabinal, y el Paabanc, una ceremonia Q’eqchi’ de Alta Verapaz, muestran dos formas distintas de mantener viva esa herencia; no constituyen un catálogo completo de las danzas del país.
Dos expresiones, dos contextos comunitarios
El Rabinal Achí se presenta como un etnodrama bailado en idioma achí, conservado mediante transmisión oral y práctica comunitaria. El Paabanc reúne danzas y otros elementos ceremoniales en una expresión Q’eqchi’ de Alta Verapaz. Compararlos permite apreciar diferencias de forma y función, no establecer una jerarquía de antigüedad o autenticidad.

Rabinal Achí: un relato bailado en idioma achí
Historia representada
El drama narra el conflicto entre los Rabinaleb y los K’iche’. La descripción de UNESCO lo identifica como un drama dinástico maya del siglo XV. En una nota ministerial sobre su desarrollo, José Manuel Coloch, director del Xajooj Tun, caracteriza el primer acto como “una clara amenaza al pueblo Rabinaleb”. La fuente no ofrece una transcripción completa de la obra ni de todos sus diálogos rituales.
Representación y preparación ritual
El Ministerio de Cultura y Deportes describe una puesta en escena de cuatro actos que dura aproximadamente dos horas. También informa que la preparación incluye siete ceremonias en siete sitios ceremoniales del territorio de Rabinal: la preparación ritual, por tanto, forma parte de la tradición más allá de la función pública.

La conservación depende de la transmisión oral y de la práctica comunitaria. El idioma no es un detalle decorativo: según Coloch, la obra se interpreta completamente en achí, con una variante antigua que refuerza su carácter ceremonial.
Reconocimientos patrimoniales
El Ministerio de Cultura y Deportes informa que el Rabinal Achí fue declarado Patrimonio Cultural Intangible de la Nación el 10 de mayo de 2004, por el Acuerdo Ministerial 294-2004. UNESCO registra la tradición como proclamada originalmente en 2005 e inscrita en la Lista Representativa del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad en 2008.

Paabanc: ceremonia Q’eqchi’ de Alta Verapaz
El Paabanc honra a Santo Domingo de Guzmán y enlaza once danzas con música, comidas, bebidas, flores y pirotecnia. Describirlo solo como una lista de bailes dejaría fuera su carácter ceremonial y los otros elementos que acompañan la expresión.
El Gobierno de Guatemala informa que fue nombrado Patrimonio Cultural Intangible de la Nación mediante el Acuerdo Ministerial 808-2022, oficializado el 1 de agosto de 2022. Las once danzas corresponden al Paabanc; no representan el número total de danzas tradicionales de Guatemala.

¿Qué danzas tradicionales hay en Guatemala?
La respuesta depende de la región y de las comunidades a las que se pregunte. El Rabinal Achí y el Paabanc son dos ejemplos documentados con contextos e identidades diferentes, no un inventario nacional.
