Danny Masterson’s small role in Face/Off is Karl, a teenage date who attempts to sexually assault Jamie Archer, the daughter of Sean Archer. Some viewers say the scene feels uncomfortable in hindsight because Masterson was later convicted of rape. That is an individual reaction—not evidence of a fan-wide consensus, or that the film anticipated his crimes.
Masterson’s role in Face/Off
John Woo’s Face/Off was released in 1997. Masterson is identified as Karl, who appears in a brief scene with Jamie Archer. The scene depicts Karl attempting to sexually assault her. The role and scene are described in a film reference listing; the available source is tertiary, so the description should not be mistaken for an authoritative scene-by-scene account.

What viewers mean when they say it “did not age well”
One Reddit commenter, describing a first viewing, called Karl “a small role as an attempted rapist” and said, “Talk about a scene that did not age well.” That comment captures a way the scene can land for a viewer who knows Masterson’s later history. It does not establish how fans generally feel: the reaction located here is anecdotal, not a poll or representative sample. An Inverse oral history offers retrospective production and film-legacy context, but no verified statement from the filmmakers or cast specifically addressing this scene’s later reception.
The later criminal case is separate from the fictional scene
In September 2023, a Los Angeles judge sentenced Masterson to 30 years to life after he was convicted of raping two women, the Associated Press reported. Masterson maintained his innocence, and his attorneys said they planned to appeal. At sentencing, Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo told him, “But Mr. Masterson, you are not the victim here.” Her words addressed the sentencing—not Face/Off or its scene. The AP’s sentencing report provides that procedural context.

In a 2025 report, the AP said Masterson filed a habeas corpus petition seeking to overturn the convictions. The petition alleged that his trial lawyer failed to present witnesses and evidence. Those are claims made in the petition, not findings that a court accepted. The AP’s report on the petition describes that later step.

The connection some viewers make is understandable: the scene portrays attempted sexual violence, and the actor was later convicted of rape. But the fictional conduct in a 1997 film, an individual viewer’s retrospective response, and the evidence and rulings in a criminal case are different things. The scene is not evidence about Masterson’s real-world conduct, and the later conviction does not make the film a prediction of it.
