In Graham McNeill’s novel Dead Sky, Black Sun, the Iron Warriors Warsmith Honsou uses captured gene-seed in an attempt to create new Chaos Space Marines. The process is horrific and deeply flawed: many candidates do not survive, and some survivors become the mutated beings called the Unfleshed. Spoilers for the novel follow.
What is the Daemonculaba?
In the Warhammer 40,000 setting, the Daemonculaba is an apparatus Honsou uses on Medrengard to produce new Iron Warriors from captured gene-seed. It is a fictional body-horror element, not a real technology or medical process. The story presents it as an attempt to expand the Chaos Space Marine ranks, not as a reliable or clean shortcut.

What happens to the candidates?
The process has devastating outcomes. Many candidates fail to survive; those who do may emerge horribly mutated. The survivors described in the story are known as the Unfleshed. The available lore summary does not establish a victim count or success rate, so neither should be inferred.
How are Honsou and Uriel Ventris involved?
Honsou’s project
Honsou is an Iron Warriors Warsmith. The Daemonculaba is a later episode in his story, following his introduction in Storm of Iron. That novel, set during the siege of Hydra Cordatus, introduced the character; Warhammer Community describes it as the first book in the Iron Warriors series, which runs parallel to the Uriel Ventris stories. Black Library’s Storm of Iron listing provides the publisher’s description, and Warhammer Community’s 2023 article gives publication context, including the novel’s original 2002 release.

Ventris’s response
Uriel Ventris leads the effort to destroy the Daemonculaba. The events bring the two characters’ stories together: Honsou’s attempt to create new warriors becomes a target of the Ultramarines captain’s mission.
Which book tells the Daemonculaba story?
The key novel is Graham McNeill’s Dead Sky, Black Sun. A specialist lore reference maps the Daemonculaba’s creation and the return of gene-seed to the prologue, the failed candidates and Unfleshed to chapter 6, Ventris’s infiltration to chapter 16, and the apparatus’s destruction to chapters 21–22. Those chapter pointers are useful for navigating the story; they are not quotations from the novel.

For context, Storm of Iron introduces Honsou, while Dead Sky, Black Sun contains the Daemonculaba plot. They are related parts of the character’s wider fiction, but they are distinct books. Black Library’s Iron Warriors: The Omnibus listing describes a collection of Honsou stories; its listed contents should not be taken to include Dead Sky, Black Sun.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the Daemonculaba matters to the story
The Daemonculaba makes Honsou’s ambition tangible: he wants to strengthen the Iron Warriors, but the method produces suffering and grotesque mutation rather than a dependable new force. The Unfleshed are central to that consequence, while Ventris’s campaign gives the plot a direct conflict and an endpoint in the destruction of the apparatus. Its significance is therefore both practical within the fiction—a production scheme—and thematic, as an example of the brutal costs of Honsou’s pursuit of power.
