Laura saves Isaac and kills the creature. In the epilogue, an older Isaac returns to its woodland nest, finds a split-skull skeleton, then goes home and calls Laura “Mum.” The ending strongly suggests the creature is gone and that Isaac has accepted Laura as family, but it never settles whether the creature was supernatural or existed in Isaac’s perception.
What happens at the end of Daddy’s Head?
After James dies, his son Isaac and stepmother Laura are left to grieve in an isolated home. The creature that appears resembles Isaac’s dead father and becomes entwined with the boy’s fear and hostility toward Laura. In the climax, Laura risks herself to save Isaac and kills the creature.
The film then jumps forward. An older Isaac visits the creature’s woodland nest and finds a skeleton with a split skull. He returns to his home and wakes Laura, addressing her as “Mum.” These are the clearest facts the ending gives us: Laura fought the creature, Isaac later finds its remains, and his relationship with Laura has changed.
What does Isaac calling Laura “Mum” mean?
The word marks a shift from suspicion to attachment. Isaac has feared that Laura might abandon him or fail to take his father’s place. By saving him, Laura shows that she will protect him; by calling her “Mum,” Isaac signals that he now accepts her as a maternal figure.

That reading fits the film’s grief story. In his review for The Guardian, Phil Hoad describes the creature as fundamentally bound to Isaac, reading it as an expression of the boy’s abandonment rage and loathing for Laura. On that interpretation, the creature’s defeat represents grief losing its power to isolate Isaac from the person who has chosen to care for him. It does not mean that Isaac has forgotten his father or that grief has vanished; the film shows a changed bond, not an erased past.
What does the skeleton in the nest prove?
The skeleton is a visual sign that the creature Laura fought is no longer active. Its split skull connects the remains to the violent end of the confrontation. In the epilogue, Isaac’s return to the nest also suggests he can face the place where the creature lived rather than remain trapped by it.

The film does not identify the skeleton’s precise biological nature or explain where the creature came from. Its purpose in the ending is emotional and visual closure, not a detailed account of the monster’s anatomy or origin.
Was the creature real or imagined?
Daddy’s Head leaves that question unresolved. The psychological reading is persuasive because the creature resembles Isaac’s father and is tied to his grief, anger and fear of losing Laura. But the film also leaves room for an external, possibly supernatural presence. The Guardian calls the film vague about whether the incursions are external, while RogerEbert.com describes a film that favors imagery over explanation and allows an alien or external reading.

The emotional meaning does not depend on choosing one answer. The creature can embody Isaac’s grief even if it is literally real within the film’s world. Calling it definitively imaginary—or claiming the ending proves a specific supernatural mythology—goes beyond what the film establishes.

- Shown: Laura saves Isaac and kills the creature; older Isaac later finds a skeleton in its nest and calls Laura “Mum.”
- Strongly implied: Isaac and Laura have formed a lasting family bond, and Isaac has begun moving forward.
- Unresolved: Whether the creature was a supernatural entity or a manifestation shaped by Isaac’s experience, and exactly what the remains were.
The conclusion offers closure in Isaac and Laura’s relationship while preserving uncertainty about the horror that brought them together. The creature is gone from the epilogue; the film leaves its literal nature—and the full shape of Isaac’s grief—open.
