What happens in “Fish Stuck”?
At a restaurant, Larry and Freddy see a fish whose mouth appears caught in an aquarium filter. When they return and the fish is gone, they suspect the restaurant has concealed what happened. A server offers another explanation: the fish was unwell and had been using the filter for warmth.
The fish’s apparent predicament inspires Larry and Freddy to invent Groat’s Disease, a supposedly serious illness they can use to end their relationships. Their scheme draws both women into the same orbit—and turns a fish in trouble into the episode’s central excuse.
#1 Best Overall
Freddy’s Disney girlfriend twist
Freddy wants out of his relationship with Jenna after learning she is a Disney Store greeter. He had taken her Disney knowledge as a sign that she was an executive, but he never asked what her job actually was. The reveal punctures his assumption and becomes his reason to break things off.
Larry’s plan is more calculated. He learns from Richard that Irma once left a husband after becoming his full-time caregiver. Larry uses that history to make Irma fear that Groat’s Disease will put her in the same position again. As the scheme unfolds, Jenna and the screenwriter daughter of Irma’s sponsor connect after Larry volunteers Jenna to read the daughter’s script. The two women bond over being made single through the illness ruse.

Hobie makes Larry’s reputation public
After an earlier temple incident, Hobie has a brick inscribed, “Larry David is disrespectful to women.” The insult turns Larry’s reputation into a permanent-looking public statement.
-
The rabbi gives Larry’s complaint a new name
Larry argues that the brick should count as hate speech. Rabbi Adelman calls it “strong dislike speech,” a distinction that neatly undercuts Larry’s attempt to frame the insult.
-
Larry antagonizes his lawyer over a baby name
Lawyer Christopher Mantle and his husband are choosing a surname for their baby. Larry criticizes their choice, aggravating Mantle just before he is due to file a motion that could keep Larry out of court over the water-bottle incident.
-
Mantle misses the filing, and the temple bricks multiply
Distracted by trouble at home after being thrown out, Mantle forgets to file the motion. Larry is left headed for trial, and the episode closes on more temple bricks bearing disparaging remarks about him.

Why the fish and the temple bricks matter
The episode’s plots run on Larry’s knack for converting a minor grievance into a larger personal crisis. The uncertain fate of the aquarium fish gives him and Freddy an opening to fabricate an illness; Larry’s complaint about the temple brick, meanwhile, draws attention to how others see him. His own meddling with Mantle’s family adds a practical consequence: the missed motion leaves him facing trial.
The result is a chain of self-inflicted complications. Larry uses other people’s discomfort to get what he wants, then finds that his behavior has consequences beyond the relationship he is trying to escape.
Plot details and the reported phrase “strong dislike speech” are described in Jonathon Wilson’s Ready Steady Cut recap, published March 4, 2024 and updated September 15, 2024.
