Narayana Johnson, the Australian composer and producer known professionally as River Boy, has died. Developer Massive Monster announced his death on April 3, 2025. Johnson was the studio’s audio director, composed and produced the Cult of the Lamb soundtrack, and voiced the game’s Followers. The announcement did not disclose a cause of death.

Massive Monster shared the news on Cult of the Lamb’s social channels on April 3, 2025. PC Gamer reported the announcement the following day, reproducing the studio’s statement and identifying Johnson as “Narayana Johnson, AKA River Boy.” The team asked for space and kindness as it grieved. The studio’s statement described Johnson as more than its Audio Director, calling him “a creative powerhouse,” a friend, and “our silly little guy.” The cited announcement and APRA AMCOS memorial do not state a cause of death, so the circumstances remain undisclosed in those accounts. He composed the soundtrack and voiced the Followers
Johnson composed and produced the game’s music as River Boy. Steam’s official soundtrack listing credits River Boy for both roles and gives its release date as August 11, 2022. Steam soundtrack listing PC Gamer also reports that Johnson voiced every Follower in the game. PC Gamer’s report

That combination of music and performance is central to the studio’s tribute. “From the first note of music to the voice of every single Follower, Narayana is woven into the soul of Cult of the Lamb,” the Massive Monster team said in the statement reproduced by PC Gamer.
His path to Massive Monster
Before his game-audio work, Johnson was one half of the electronic duo Willow Beats and also released music as River Boy. APRA AMCOS says Massive Monster director Julian Wilton, a fan of Willow Beats, contacted Johnson through Twitter direct messages. Johnson later became the studio’s Director of Audio. Award-winning work and a lasting community presence

Steam lists a downloadable Cult of the Lamb soundtrack, while APRA AMCOS confirms that a vinyl release exists.
