Released by Rhino on October 25, 2024, the double live album preserves a transitional moment: four musicians moving between acoustic songs and an electric set while building toward the material that would become Déjà vu.
What the album captures
The recording comes from the Fillmore East in New York City, where CSNY played four shows across September 19 and 20, 1969. Rhino identifies this performance as the final show of that run and the band’s fourth Fillmore East appearance in two days. It is a document of the group’s first tour, not a new recording made for the album’s 2024 release.
David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and Neil Young had only recently joined forces as a touring quartet. The set moves from an acoustic opening into a louder electric section, reflecting a band still developing its live identity. In a remark reproduced by Rhino, Stills recalled that the acoustic portion came naturally, while the electric band—with drummer Dallas Taylor and bassist Greg Reeves—was still learning to make the most of its equipment and larger shows: “What we lacked in finesse, we made up for in enthusiasm…A band on the run. Expecting to fly.”
The moment sits between CSNY’s celebrated Woodstock appearance and the writing and touring that followed through the rest of 1969. Rhino says the band was then writing material for its 1970 album Déjà vu, which became the quartet’s full-length debut.

Who recorded and mixed it, and how?
The release was assembled from newly discovered multitrack tapes of the concert. Stills and Young compiled and mixed the original eight-track recordings with John Hanlon at Sunset Sound Studios in Los Angeles. Rhino describes the vinyl lacquer as AAA. Young’s explanation, as quoted in Rhino’s release announcement, was that the tapes sounded real and that the team used Sunset Sound’s analog echo chamber, with no digital echo, keeping the production analog throughout.
These are the label’s descriptions of the recording and production process; they do not establish a separate technical measurement of sound quality. Nash’s reflection, also reproduced by Rhino, offers a more personal measure of the archive’s value: “Hearing the music again after all these years, I can tell how much we loved each other and loved the music that we were creating.”

Why “Our House” is a notable moment
Nash sings “Our House” at the organ in an early performance of the song, with its inspiration, Joni Mitchell, in the audience, according to Rhino. The song would later become part of Déjà vu. Here, it belongs to a concert still unfolding in real time, before the group’s studio-era story had fully taken shape.

The set draws on the quartet’s separate musical histories as well as its emerging identity. “Our House” points toward the forthcoming Déjà vu; Young’s “I’ve Loved Her So Long” reaches back to Buffalo Springfield; and the electric songs show CSNY expanding beyond the close vocal blend of the acoustic set.

Rhino reports that Déjà vu was released on March 11, 1970, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and received 7× Platinum RIAA certification. Those milestones belong to the studio album, not to the Fillmore concert or this live release.
Young’s recollection, as reproduced by Rhino, casts the partnership as a continuation of the Buffalo Springfield connection with Stills, energized by Crosby and the group’s combined vocals. The Fillmore tape makes that early collaboration audible as a performance in progress rather than a retrospective reconstruction.
