Crunchyroll Added OVERLORD: The Sacred Kingdom—Here’s Where to Watch It in the Series

Crunchyroll has added OVERLORD: The Sacred Kingdom to its catalog. The 2024 anime film currently has a 94% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes from seven critic reviews, although both the score and review count can change. It is a continuation for established Overlord viewers—not an ideal entry point for newcomers.

OVERLORD: The Sacred Kingdom is the anime film Crunchyroll added to its catalog in April 2025. The 2024 feature currently carries a 94% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on seven critic reviews at the time of research. That score and review count can change as Rotten Tomatoes updates its page.

The film is a particularly useful addition for returning Overlord viewers: it adapts the Sacred Kingdom storyline from Kugane Maruyama’s light novels and continues the larger anime narrative. It is not, however, the best starting point for someone who has never seen the series.

What is OVERLORD: The Sacred Kingdom about?

The story centers on Ains Ooal Gown, a former MMORPG player who now rules the game-like world as the undead Sorcerer King. When Jaldabaoth leads an army of monstrous demi-humans against the Sacred Kingdom, the kingdom’s leaders are forced to request help from a neighboring power they have every reason to fear.

That uneasy appeal to Ains creates the film’s central tension. The Sacred Kingdom needs military assistance, but relying on an undead ruler introduces an obvious political and moral danger. The premise allows the movie to do what Overlord has long done best: present a conflict in which conventional heroes, political factions, and Ains’s own overwhelming power do not fit neatly into simple good-and-evil categories.

The film was directed and scripted by Naoyuki Ito, with animation by Madhouse. It is based on the light novels written by Kugane Maruyama and illustrated by so-bin.

When did Crunchyroll add the film?

OVERLORD: The Sacred Kingdom was released in Japan on September 20, 2024. Crunchyroll subsequently added it to its streaming catalog in April 2025; the service’s official listing records an April 25, 2025 release entry.

Streaming rights are regional, so the film may not appear in every country or with the same language options. On the researched Crunchyroll listing, the available audio options include Japanese, English, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Russian, with English subtitles. Check the title’s listing in your own region before subscribing or expecting a particular dub.

Is the 94% Rotten Tomatoes score accurate?

Rotten Tomatoes listed the movie at 94% on the Tomatometer from seven critic reviews at the time this article was researched. That is a strong early critical score, but it should not be treated as a permanent rating. Aggregator scores can rise or fall when additional reviews are added or an existing page is updated.

The small review pool also matters. A 94% score from seven reviews indicates that the available critics were broadly positive; it does not carry the same statistical context as a score built from dozens or hundreds of reviews. Readers should recheck the Rotten Tomatoes listing for the current score and review count.

Where does the movie fit in the Overlord watch order?

Crunchyroll’s official watch-order guidance places The Sacred Kingdom after the four television seasons and two earlier compilation movies. A practical order is:

  1. OVERLORD Season 1
  2. OVERLORD: The Undead King — an optional recap movie
  3. OVERLORD: The Dark Hero — another optional recap movie
  4. OVERLORD II
  5. OVERLORD III
  6. OVERLORD IV
  7. OVERLORD: The Sacred Kingdom

The two compilation films recap parts of the television story. If you have recently watched all four seasons, they may not be necessary. If you need a refresher, they can help restore the timeline before the feature.

Parks and Recreation: The Complete Series [DVD]
  • Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba - 4
  • Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba - 4
  • Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba - 4
  • Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba - 4
  • Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba - 4

What should not be skipped is the broader television story. The movie assumes that viewers already recognize the major characters, factions, political relationships, and the history surrounding Ains and the Sorcerer Kingdom. Starting here may leave a newcomer unsure why the Sacred Kingdom distrusts Ains, who Jaldabaoth is, and why the request for help is so dangerous.

The light novel behind the film

The film adapts material connected to Overlord, Vol. 12: The Paladin of the Sacred Kingdom Part I, the English light-novel edition published by Yen Press. The volume is written by Kugane Maruyama and illustrated by so-bin, and its story focuses on the Sacred Kingdom’s confrontation with Jaldabaoth.

Readers who want to explore the source material can find the English edition through booksellers listed by Yen Press, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, Indigo, Kinokuniya, and the Crunchyroll Store. This is a light novel recommendation, not a physical release of the movie. The Sacred Kingdom storyline continues into a second volume, but availability, pricing, and retailer listings for Volume 13 should be checked separately.

If you prefer to read before watching, Volume 12 is the most directly relevant purchase. If you have already seen the film, the novel offers a way to revisit the arc in its original prose form and investigate details that a feature-length adaptation may compress.

Who should watch it?

  • Existing Overlord fans: This is the clearest audience for the film. It advances the anime’s larger story and focuses on a major conflict rather than functioning as a disconnected side story.
  • Viewers who finished Season 4: Follow the official order and watch the movie after the fourth season, using the compilation films only if you need a recap.
  • Newcomers: Begin with Season 1. The film’s premise is easy to summarize, but its character relationships and political stakes depend on earlier events.
  • Light-novel readers: Volume 12, The Paladin of the Sacred Kingdom Part I, is the natural source-material companion.

What to know before pressing play

  • The relevant Japanese theatrical release was in 2024, not 2026.
  • Crunchyroll’s streaming entry dates to April 2025, with the official listing recording April 25.
  • The 94% Rotten Tomatoes score is a snapshot, not a fixed guarantee.
  • Catalog access, subtitles, and dubs can differ by country.
  • The movie is designed for people familiar with the existing Overlord anime.

For returning fans, Crunchyroll’s addition supplies a new animated chapter centered on one of the franchise’s most consequential conflicts. For everyone else, the sensible route is to start with OVERLORD Season 1, work through the television seasons, and then treat The Sacred Kingdom as the payoff rather than the introduction.
