The Burswood Peninsula’s story is more complicated than the shorthand “rubbish tip”: sewage-filtration beds came first, refuse dumping followed, and the resort’s hotels and entertainment venues were added in later stages.
What was on the Burswood Peninsula before the casino?
Between 1906 and 1912, 22 acres of Burswood were resumed for sewage-filtration beds. They closed in 1934. The Western Australian Planning Commission’s 2021 history says refuse dumping began after the Second World War, with waste accepted from 1946.
Domestic fill ceased in 1972, but that was not the end of all filling. Other material, including building rubble, continued to be deposited into the early 1980s, according to the planning history. Burswood Park Board’s account likewise says domestic garbage stopped in 1972 and rubble continued for a number of years. Calling the site a rubbish tip captures part of its past, but leaves out both the earlier sewage works and the different timelines for waste and other fill.
When did Crown Perth open?
The casino opened as Burswood Island Casino on 30 December 1985. The state granted a casino licence that year to a joint venture established by Perth entrepreneur Dallas Dempster and Malaysia’s Genting Group. Burswood Park Board’s official history says significant site remediation took place before the opening. The available histories do not detail the remediation methods or independently quantify its environmental results.

The opening date is the anniversary being marked: it was 40 years on 30 December 2025. It does not mark the opening of every part of today’s resort, which grew through subsequent development.

The 1987 openings show why the casino’s anniversary should not be mistaken for the launch of the entire integrated resort. The Burswood Dome, hotel and convention centre arrived nearly two years after the casino.

What does Crown Perth include today?
Crown Perth’s current property page, accessed 8 October 2026, describes three hotels with 1,188 rooms combined, 33 restaurants and bars, a 24-hour casino, a convention centre and meeting rooms, a 2,300-seat theatre, and other recreation facilities. These are company-listed property details and may change over time.
Crown Resorts’ 2025 anniversary release estimates that Crown Perth contributes approximately $1.2 billion annually to Western Australia’s economy. That is a company-published estimate; the release does not provide an independent methodology, so it should not be read as an independently verified figure.

What the 40-year milestone means—and what it does not
The anniversary marks four decades since the casino opened, not four decades of a fully formed resort. The documented history runs from sewage filtration and waste disposal, through site remediation, to a casino opening in 1985 and a broader collection of facilities added in 1987 and later. The names changed too: Burswood Island Casino, Burswood Entertainment Complex, then Crown Perth.
The phrase “WA’s best entertainment precinct” is a promotional or editorial description, not a verified comparative ranking in the available sources. The history supports a substantial transformation and expansion; it does not establish that Crown Perth is objectively the state’s best precinct.

People who witnessed the opening
PerthNow interviewed casino manager David Littler, who began as a blackjack dealer on opening night in 1985. Reflecting on his 40 years at the venue, he said: “I’m awfully proud to stay on for 40 years and grow with the industry.” He also recalled the formal feel of opening night: “Everyone got really dressed up to come,” he said. “It was a really dressy occasion.” These are an employee’s personal memories of the event.
In Crown Resorts’ 30 December 2025 anniversary release, Crown Perth CEO Brian Pereira offered the company’s perspective on the venue: “Anyone who has worked at Crown will tell you it is the people who make the place so special, and that rings true today.”
