Critical Role’s principal performers return to the animated series, but they take on a new ensemble drawn from Campaign Two. The newer adaptation also gives its story more room: its episodes run about 45 minutes, compared with the 22-minute installments of Vox Machina.
Which Critical Role cast members return?
Amazon’s official cast list for The Mighty Nein includes the same principal Critical Role performers associated with The Legend of Vox Machina: Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Liam O’Brien, Matthew Mercer, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, and Travis Willingham. Amazon’s series page identifies the animated series cast, while Critical Role’s Campaign One page and Campaign Two page show the campaign context for the players’ characters.
The important distinction is between performer continuity and character continuity. The performers carry over; they are not simply reprising their Vox Machina roles. The Mighty Nein centers on a different adventuring party, with its own relationships, histories, and conflicts. The official campaign pages establish the player-character rosters, but they are not a complete official crosswalk of animated-series voice credits, so a full actor-to-animated-character list should not be inferred from them.
Are the two series connected?
Yes. They adapt separate Critical Role campaigns set in Exandria, the same fictional world. The Legend of Vox Machina adapts Campaign One; The Mighty Nein adapts Campaign Two. Amazon describes the newer series as another story in the Exandria universe and places it 20 years after the events of The Legend of Vox Machina. That links the settings without making the second show a direct continuation of Vox Machina’s character story.

- The paintless design does not chip, is odorless, and resistant to moisture. This dice tower comes with a set of random 7PCS D20 dices.
- Roll your dice by throwing them through the opening and let it land in the tray. The randomization is much better by using a dice tower vs using your hands.
- The landing tray can hold up to 5 dices. Some designs feature removable trays for easy storage.
- This dice tower can be a excellent decor piece for your campaign or a talking point for your group.
- Designed and manufactured by MunnyGrubbers in the USA.
What changed in the adaptation?
More time for each episode
The Mighty Nein episodes run 45 minutes, according to Critical Role’s animated-series page; TheWrap also reports that runtime and contrasts it with 22-minute Vox Machina installments. In an interview with TheWrap, Travis Willingham said the cast wanted more “runway” for the new series, adding, “The settings are more complex. The storylines are more intricate.” The longer format gives the adaptation more episode time to establish those stories, though runtime alone does not determine pacing or quality.
Different introductions and character origins
TheWrap reports that the adaptation changes how viewers meet some characters and introduces some earlier than in the original campaign. Cast and creators have also described revisiting character origins and expanding stories for the animated version. These are structural choices for a scripted series, rather than a scene-for-scene transfer of the campaign. The specific effect depends on the character and story; it is not a reason to assume that every plot point or introduction differs.

How should viewers approach the transition?
Think of the shows as two entries in the same setting, built around different parties and different campaigns. Familiarity with Vox Machina can provide context for Exandria, but the cast change in roles means the newer series begins a new character story rather than asking viewers to follow the original party into its next chapter.
