Crazy Rich Asians follows New Yorker Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) to Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding), where his family’s wealth and his mother’s disapproval reshape their visit. The wedding that brings them there belongs to Nick’s best friend Colin Khoo (Chris Pang) and bride Araminta Lee (Sonoya Mizuno).
The central couple and the Young family
Rachel and Nick are the film’s central couple. Rachel is visiting Singapore for the first time; Nick has not told her that he is heir to one of the country’s wealthiest families and a sought-after bachelor. That difference in what they know sets up Rachel’s encounter with his family and its social world.

Film and production context
Directed by Jon M. Chu, Crazy Rich Asians adapts Kevin Kwan’s novel. Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim receive screenplay credit. The American Film Institute’s catalog classifies it as a romantic comedy and records a 120-minute runtime, a PG-13 rating and a U.S. release date of August 15, 2018: AFI Catalog entry. The Singapore Tourism Board and Warner Bros. described it as a contemporary romantic comedy and identified Warner Bros. Pictures as worldwide distributor in their release announcement.
The production filmed at several Singapore locations. CNA’s account of the shoot describes associate producer Janice Chua’s location scouting and input into script development, including work on the local texture of dialogue: CNA’s report on the Singapore locations. That production detail does not make the film a comprehensive representation of Singapore’s communities.
