Cowboy Bob Orton Jr. helped make the first WrestleMania’s main event memorable without being one of its wrestlers: he stood in Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff’s corner, and his cast-assisted interference backfired on Orndorff. That ringside role captures Orton’s value in the WWF’s 1980s expansion era. He was a vivid, effective heel whose alliances, look and well-timed interference could shape a major match from outside the ropes.
What was Cowboy Bob Orton’s role at the first WrestleMania?
Orton was a second, not an in-ring participant, in the main event of WrestleMania I: Hulk Hogan and Mr. T faced Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff. WWE’s retrospective says Orton tried to strike Mr. T with his plaster cast, but hit Orndorff instead, helping turn the match against Piper and Orndorff. The moment condensed Orton’s character into one ringside action: he was a dangerous ally, but his interference could also change the course of the match for his own side. WWE’s profile of Bob Orton recounts the episode.
That is why Orton matters to the event’s story even though he was not one of its headlining wrestlers. He embodied the heel second—the accomplice who could threaten an opponent, distract an official or disrupt a finish while giving the match another character to watch.
Why did he wear a cast?
WWE says Orton injured his arm in the mid-1980s and then used the plaster cast as a weapon when the referee was not looking. The cast gave him a distinctive prop and a believable excuse to bring a weapon into the action while presenting it as medical support. WWE calls it one of the most deadly foreign objects in its history; that is the company’s promotional description, not a measured ranking.

A 1999 SLAM! Wrestling interview also refers to Orton’s cast, describing the arm as “‘injured’” in quotation marks. The available accounts do not establish the injury’s precise duration or treatment, so the cast’s role as a wrestling device is clearer than the medical details behind it.
How did Orton’s alliances change?
Roddy Piper’s ally
Orton became closely associated with Piper, appearing in his corner at WrestleMania I and at WrestleMania 2, where Piper boxed Mr. T. WWE describes Orton as one of Piper’s closest allies. Their partnership put Orton beside one of the era’s most prominent heels and gave him a recurring presence around high-profile matches.

A heel after Piper’s turn
When Piper moved toward fan-favorite status, Orton did not follow him into that role. WWE says Orton aligned with Adrian Adonis and traded his cowboy hat for a pink one. The change made their separation legible at a glance: Orton remained a heel, with a new partner and an altered look rather than a new moral outlook.
WrestleMania III with Don Muraco
Orton later teamed with Don Muraco in the opening match of WrestleMania III against the Can-Am Connection. His place on that card differed from the first WrestleMania: rather than standing in a main-event corner, he was wrestling in a tag match. Together, these appearances show a performer who moved between ringside support and the card itself.

What did Orton say about learning the craft?
In a 2014 WWE interview, Orton described his father, Bob Orton Sr., as a wrestler whose small gestures could carry meaning: “If he moved one finger it meant something.” He was discussing his father’s ring psychology, not describing his own style.
Orton also recalled that his father sent him to train with Hiro Matsuda in Florida, and said he worked out alongside wrestlers including Jack Brisco and Bob Backlund. Comparing generations, Orton characterized his father’s wrestling as slower and more deliberate, while his own era demanded faster decisions. That is his personal perspective on the craft, rather than an objective ranking of either generation’s technique.

Why remember a supporting heel?
Orton’s profile is a useful reminder that wrestling history is not only a record of champions and main-event participants. In WWE’s account, his cast, alliance with Piper and ringside work connected him to some of the WWF’s defining early WrestleMania moments. His career also included changing partners and wrestling in a major event’s opening match, not just the supporting role at WrestleMania I.
WWE lists Orton as a 2005 Hall of Fame inductee. Its profile gives his dimensions as 6’1” and 242 lbs, without dating those measurements; they should be read as profile information, not a statistic tied to a particular point in his career.

Where to explore Orton’s career further
For the WrestleMania-era story, WWE’s profile and the 2014 interview offer official context, although WWE’s profile is retrospective and promotional. WWE describes access to historical and recent programming through its streaming routes, but the availability of Orton’s specific matches can vary; check the current catalog before subscribing for a particular match.
The 2018 review of SUPERCARD: WrestleMania 1 describes a physical DVD featuring Sean Oliver interviewing Orton about his WWF involvement leading up to WrestleMania I. The review says it is not a full career retrospective. For a wider-ranging interview, RF Video lists a separate digital-only Bob Orton career interview, described as covering his training, WWF period, WrestleMania appearances, work in other territories and later career.
