At least six couples were named in reports about proposals around the Paris 2024 Olympics. Euronews reported on August 7, 2024, that the count had reached seven, but its roundup text identifies only six couples. That figure is a snapshot from during the Games, not a confirmed final total.
Couples whose proposals were reported around the Paris Olympics
The moments unfolded in several settings—from the Olympic Village to Marseille and the track-and-field stadium. The list below includes the six couples named in the available reports; it does not supply an unidentified seventh couple.
| Couple | Who proposed | When and where | Competition context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pablo Simonet and Maria Pilar Campoy | Handball player Simonet proposed to fellow Argentine Olympian Campoy. | In Paris, before the opening ceremony. | Before competition. They had been together since 2015 and both competed at Rio 2016, according to NBC Olympics. |
| Sarah Steyaert and Charline Picon | Their partners proposed to the French sailors. | After the pair returned ashore in Marseille. | After winning Olympic bronze. NBC Olympics reported that the partners had discussed getting engaged if the sailors won a medal. |
| Liu Yu Chen and Huang Ya Qiong | Liu proposed to Huang. | Minutes after Huang’s badminton mixed-doubles victory. | After Huang won gold. Euronews reported that Liu presented her with an engagement ring. |
| Justin Best and Lainey Duncan | Best proposed to Duncan. | The Euronews roundup identifies them as a couple but does not state the proposal’s specific setting or timing. | Best is identified as a U.S. rowing athlete and Duncan as a former Irish dancer. Euronews does not provide further details in its roundup. |
| Payton Otterdahl and Maddy Nilles | Shot putter Otterdahl proposed to collegiate hammer thrower Nilles. | In front of the Eiffel Tower. | Euronews reports the location; its roundup does not specify a competition result tied to the proposal. |
| Alice Finot and Bruno Martínez Bargiela | French runner Finot proposed to her Spanish triathlete partner. | After the women’s 3,000-metre steeplechase final, at the stadium. | Finot had just broken the European record but missed a medal. She offered an Olympic pin she had carried during the race; according to Euronews, it read “Love is in the air in Paris.” |
Proposal moments behind the headlines
Simonet and Campoy: a proposal before the opening ceremony
Simonet described Campoy’s answer in a caption reproduced in translation by NBC Olympics: “The woman of my life said yes to me. In the dream place, where everything arose and where we fought so hard to be. Happiness is total, thank you friends, and few accomplices for making this special and being able to keep this for ourselves forever. Paris is always a good idea.” The wording is NBC Olympics’ translated rendering of his post, not a verified original-language transcript.
Steyaert and Picon: a medal-day promise kept
At a press conference after the medal ceremony, Steyaert recalled the partners’ condition: “Our boyfriends said at the beginning of the project that if we won a medal we would be engaged, but mine said ‘Only gold or silver,’ so after the medal race I said, ‘Okay so I will not be engaged,’” Picon joked that the promise had seemed easy three years earlier because they did not expect to win a medal.

Finot and Bargiela: an Olympic pin instead of a ring

Euronews’ August 7, 2024 roundup said there had been seven wedding proposals, but the available roundup text names only the six couples above. It is therefore accurate to say that seven had been reported by that date, not that these six form a complete list or that seven was the final total for the full Games.
